Default 3" lake pipes on Charger?

Ok, you people have helped me out a lot in the past so I'm gonna give ya'll another one. I'm Pro-Touring a 68 Charger and am concerned with the way I want my exhaust to exit. If possible, I would like to get a 3" exhaust and send it out back before the rear tires ala AAR Cuda/TA Challenger. But the deal is I believe my sub frame connectors and my torque boxes will be in the way. There will be no mufflers on these pipes because I will also be using electronic cutouts and will be sending the true exhaust (with mufflers) dumped right before the rear end. This car will be very low for SCCA type racing and lots of cruising. I have seen the 3" oval exhaust on NASCAR's rides for added ground clearance but have no idea what the cost is. Finally, how do the TA's and AAR's get their pipes out the side without scraping the ground? The cars don't sit that high do they? Ya'll have a good one and thanks again.

I can't tell you what the oval exhausts cost (probably LOTS) but I can tell you how the AARs and T/As did it. Their systems were pretty much just a stock dual exhaust, with the tailpipes coming out of the back of the mufflers and then folding back and exiting out the side. Pure show only.

72, so after the pipe exited the muffler, it did a 90 straight to the back wheel? If that's the case, then the exhaust would be functional and not for show only right? I'm assuming the pipes were 2 1/4" maybe 2 1/2" so that no contact with the underbody would occur?

They were functional, yes. But I have to correct myself. The tailpipes didn't exit the back of the muffler, they exited the front! The exhaust gasses had to make a 180 degree turn inside the muffler, then a 90 degree turn again to come out the side. Not the best flowing system for sure.

There was no contact with the underbody, the system hung from special hanger straps and brackets at the back of the mufflers. The side exhaust had a tab on the pipe that slid into a special hanger with a rubber insulator to absorb vibration.

Ok I gotcha. I just really like that side exit look and I think the Charger got shafted when it came to hood scoops, side exhausts and other trick options. You guys get the Shaker hood and the cool exhausts and all we get are blinker lights in the inverted scoops...Whoa, lookit me now!!

Anyway, do you have subframe connectors on your ride and if so, how is the exhaust routed around it? I'm guessing the rear end was kicked up a little bit for clearance? Thanks again.

I hope I didn't mislead you into thinking that my car is a T/A. I don't need to route my exhaust around the subframe connectors because my exhaust runs inside the frame rails and exits out the back.

However, the T/A was the only car sold by Dodge that used larger tires on the rear than the front. So you could say the rear was kicked up a little. But it wasn't done to provide clearance for the pipes. They are a little closer to the ground than a standard system.

$500 for a spin tech system with side exits. (AAR or T/A look alike)

$60 a stick for oval type nascar tubing.

If you had an x pipe it would give you more Hp and Tq. The subframe connectors will cause a major clearance issue. Best thing to do is run 2 1/3 pipe with a merge X pipe with some low restriction race mufflers out the rear instead of this side pipe exit if you want to get the most from your engine and set up.
