Default 318 or 360 block

I have a 64 V-100 valiant two door post car, it had a 273 w/ a three on tree. Well that motor is gone, and I want to build a motor with a little more power. My budget is limited, I have a set of 4027596 heads w/ 1.88 1.60 valves, I also have a cast iron 4bbl intake to match the heads. What I want to know should I uses these on a 318 or a 360, I want enough power to get out of my own way, i will be using a 4sp trans and changing the axle in the car. What cam, carb?. I have never put a motor together and would like as much input as possible

hello, if you're startin over, i'd find a 360 engine. get it rebuilt bolt it in and pick up an easy 50-75 hp over that 273.

agree a 360 block bore size will much better suit your 1.88 intakes than a 318 block.

I allways say to start simple....Do a copy of the 340 HP engines of yesteryear. Just keep the comp. lower at a max of 9.5-1.
(9-1 would be better, more gas freindly/tolorent)
That stock iron intake, is it a T-Q intake? If so, A T-Q carb is real nice. tiny primarys for mileage and huge secondarys for power. It can be dialed in for smooth transtion.
340 resto or upgraded 340 cam and a set of headers.
When your tired of that combo, just pocket port the heads with 2.02 valves and get a larger cam.
The 360 should be a few bucks cheaper to rebuild and everything else the same. A T-Q carb custom taylored by demonsizzler is still cheaper than a new Holley.

Anybody have his web site addy handy?

What is nice finally some has made 360 main spacer kit that will allow a 2.5 " 340 crank to be used in a 360 block, no more 340 block hunting, {well i still do ; ).

www.moparmecca.com kits are 249.00 but well worth it, brand new item, not even sure if they have it up on the site yet, you can email bill on the site for information, this a great thing for us 340 guys, go .040 on the 360 or more, and 3.31 crank = 340! installed kit {main bore alignment is very important} the spacers are installed and pinned in caps and align honed to size once in place. they also have the spacers that do not need to be align honed for same price, heaven SENT... on the second day god created the 340.

wow Wait A Minute.....

I don't what the intake is, the heads and intake came off a dipliomat. It might have been a cop car. The advice is great but, I am not undetstanding how you turn a 360 in to a 340 are you destroking it? It sounds expensive, I am just a student about to graduate college, not even working yet. I have money stashed thats I am spending, so I need to keep it cheap, I want to get the car back on the road for summer. Thanks

Yea would be a lil costly, for you, yes you are right you are destroking it from 3.58 to 3.31, to make a 340 ci out of a 360 block.

pstone;

Sorry, I think we started talking to each other abit and got of topic. You should ignore the spacers and destroking talk.
The heads that came off the Dip, is that a 318 engine?

Default 318

yes it was a 318, the car was not recognizable, it was what was left of a Dip. it had completely burned. So I got the heads and the intake, the block had a hole in the side, it is one of the salvage yards close to me. I have had the heads already rebulit, new springs, guides, valves and anything else that was needed. The heads are straight.

Ok~ cool. Just wanted to make sure about something. You squared it away. The heads came from a Dip 318 4bbl. That makes the port windows big. AKA 360 heads, on a 318.
318's never had there own port size head and a 4bbl on top. They got 360 heads and intakes.
Go 360 and don't look back.
