318 to 360 MOTOR MOUNT QUESTIONS!!!
I'm putting a 360 into my 1976 Dodge Aspen. It had a 318 in that I launched so I'm going with the bigger cubes. Will the motor mounts off the 318 work to bolt in the 360? The 318 had four mounting holes but the 360 has only three. The 318 was a 1976 and the 360 is a 1978 out of a van. Any info is greatly appreciated!!!

Mounts
I just did my 318 to 360 swap on Monday. Yes..the mounts will work, the only (minor) detail is that the driver side mount ear is different on the 360. The 318 mount WILL work, you just need about 1/2" of washers to fill in the gap between the block ear and mount bracket on one bolt.
It was the easiest swap I ever did. Do you need the 904 flex plate for balance?, I used the B&M to adapt to my 904. Hope this eases your mind.. |

Can't I internally balance the rotating assembly with pulley, flexplate, and converter? Do I need to do something special to balance this? I'm using a TCI Streetfighter 727 with a 3000 stall and the TCI Flexplate for the small block mopar.

Balance
Unless your engine was internally balanced by your machine shop (in which case you need a different Dampener) you will need the B&M flex plate with the stock 360 Dampener or it will vibrate the engine to DEATH.
The plate is about $74.00 at Checker. The plate has holes for 904 or 727. Unless someone knows more than me (probably) about TCI stuff. My 360 went behind a 904 that was all stock so that is what I am going by. |

The rotating assembly will all be balanced internally. Do I need to get the $259.00 balancer that doesn't have cut outs for weight?

Balance
You will need the neutral balanced one. Your machine shop can guide you the best. They know what needs to be added for your combo to work right.

Hey Aspen. I just went through the balancing act on a 360 rebuild last year. Internal balancing is of course the best but have you checked pricing? Hopefully you've got a BIG pocket full of money!! To internally balance a 360 crank they have to add "Mallory Metal" (very dense metal) to the crank which is real expensive. I would have liked to do this but had to go the route of the B&M flexplate (same as TCI flexplate) and a neutral balance converter. I had a very experienced Mopar machinist do mine and he said it would hold up to anything I could put it through on the street and strip.
Good luck, Tracy |

Even if the crank is balanced I still have to run the neutral balancer and balance everything from the front pulley to the converter right? I have the TCI flexplate and the TCI Streetfighter Stall converter for the 727.

Guess what! Mopar Muscle just did that swap on their Diplomat!
Check it out, it even has picutes of the mounting & spacer you need! Awesome for sure. This really helps out if you have the F/M/J body cars that everybody seems to avoid. I like mine so far. Good luck, it's all good! |

If it's external balanced you need the weighted stock type balancer a stock flex plate and a converter with weights on it or the TCI flex plate and a converter with no weights on it. Give me your e mail addy if you have any questions. We build and race 360's in our NASCAR Sportsman cars. We can tell you all you need to know about them. And internal balancing of these engines makes them last much longer at higher rpm's too. |

Aspen, this is an easy swap as I have a 360/904 with headers in my Mirada. The left side engine mount is different than a 318 - I simply bought new mounts for a 360 Dippy cop car as the old ones were soggy anyway. As for the balancing - pay attention here!! get that sorted out properly before you install or have fun like I did trying to sort out an annoying buzz that turned out to be an improperly weighted remanned converter . Either get a full internally balanced rotating assy (mucho dinero but the best way to go if you're gonna run high revs) or use the correct aftermarket 360 flexplate and stock or aftermarket 360 harmonic balancer so you can use your choice of neutrally-balanced converter. Your machine shop should point you in the right direction here. If the shop tells you that a Mopar 360 is internally balanced as built, grab all your parts and run away as fast as you can!! Another tip - if you're doing headers dump the column shift if you haven't already - simplifies the install greatly. Have fun!!
