Question ignition timing?????

What is the best way to achieve a good timing curve? I was setting mine,( edelbrock perf rpm cam) . the big red ed says to advance as much as i can get away with, I do have access to both 91 and 93 pump gas. What kind of advance springs do I get for my psuedo elec distributor, 1984 truck vintage. I am almost sure that I am at 20 degrees btc at idle with no vac advance( off and plugged. goes to 37 degrees at 4000 with vac hooked back up. Still not a peep of a ping with my 318 360heads .050 shaved heads (11:1 compression????) how far do I advance, and by when? any feedback is appreciated

The reason there is no ping is because there should be approximately 52 degrees total at 4000 RPM.
Try this procedure:
Forget initial timing
with vacuum disconnected and plugged
set idle to 3000 RPM
set dist to 36 degrees and lock down
reconnect vacuum at 3000 RPM should read 52 degrees
adjust vacuum advance degrees with allen head wrench in center of dash pot.

Man that is a lot. I believe what you say, but did you learn this from experience, or is this published somewhere? Is there a book I should have for hot rodding "tweeks" or can I just ask questions here? Don't want to seem like a vulture, but I'll take all the knowledge I can get. btw, that timing figure is the highest i've heard of. am i imagining this?

are those stock pistons in that 318 ? if they are, even with the 050 milled heads you're probably at 8.5 to 1.
i'd give it all the timing it will take.

That works out to 9.2:1, assuming stock bore size and a .040 gasket thickness, no valve reliefs on flat top pistons.

The 52 degree advance figure is with total vaccuum advance. This is not unreasonable for a street driven vehicle. You will only achieve that high a number while decelerating. Even under part throttle, the total amount of vaccuum advance won't be seen if you set it up right. Between 32 and 36 degrees total advance without vaccuum should be right. Setting to the most you can get without detonation will not necessarily give you the best power or economy.

Most mp gurus advise between 34-36 total at 3000 rpm, no vacuum

34º - 36º at 3,000 RPM is the best place to be. However, if your advance isn't properly setup, it won't do you any good. You should have the distributor tuned, before setting for that timin
