Manifold/Carb woes
Okay, as I mentioned I would do in a previous thread about our "Project 'Cuda, I have just obtained a Carter TQ (6322) spread bore to place atop the LD340 that we got a month or so ago. Problem is, when I placed the carb on the manifold (not on car yet) and tried to open the throttle, the butterflies, even the primaries, strike the flange. The old AVS I have does not do this, but I was told a TQ would be a better choice, sooooooo.
What's the "fix", wrong TQ or, do I need a spacer, do I grind "holes" in the manifold opening, or what? My fear with a spacer is I would't be able to shut the (bulge) hood, at least with the stock air cleaner. The manifold has a divider, but it has a slot cut out of it, about 1/2" deep and 3/4" long, I cannot tell if that is orig or a mod. Thanks, Bill |

Your intake is designed for use with a square bore carb. You need an intake that is designed for use with a spreadbore.
You can get an adapter spacer. It is squarebore on one side and spreadbore on the other. The carb just won't perform as well as if it were on the correct intake. |

Great, I'm batting a thousand here. Well, I do have a 780 Holley laying around, I suppose if it was big enough for a 383 +.060, it should be plenty big enough for a 340. Isn't an AVS a spreadbore too? Mine has small primaries and large secondaries. Or maybe I just don't understand the diff.
I coulda swore somebody said that the LD340 and a TQ would be a good combo. Bill |

hello, yes they are good combo. just add the spacer, grind the manifold as needed to make it work. in the older mopar engine/carb section, showed how to do this. the setup will perform very well. give it a try, nothing ventured, nothing gained.
spacers are availible. most are 1/2 inch thick. |

Thanks, perfmachst. Where can I find the "carb/engine" section that shows how to do that. I did a search and came up with nothing. Or is that feature gone now?
Does the spacer even have to have "holes" in it? I have an old aluminum spacer with four tapered (same size) holes in it, no idea what it is for, but I could just cut the center out and make one big opening. Is that sufficient for this application? If so, should I leave a "divider" in the center, to match the one in the manifold? Still unclear about the "notch" in the manifold's divider, is that original? Bill |

The Carter AVS is a square bore design.
He is refering to the MOPAR engines book, not moparchat. |

Great! Big Time thanks for the illustration, I think I'll give that modification a try. Looks like maybe I could use a spread bore base gasket as a template.
As it turns out the spacer I have will not work, it is not deep enough (front to back) for the TQ, as it exposes what looks like an idle circuit in the base, to the outside. Bill |
