Default Rear Wheel Clunk

A friend just picked up a '95 Neon in very good condition. Drives fine except for clunking from the right rear wheel. I thought it might be a broken shock but ruled that out . I can thump the tire and hear the clunk. Grabbing the top of the tire and shaking it makes the clunk and I can feel play. Both of these tests are with the tire on the ground. I am thinking loose wheel bearing. Any ideas?

Arrow jack it up

remove the wheel and look closer.if the bearing is good, something else is falling apart, but thats probably it.

I agree, does sound like a wheel bearing problem-especially with the part about the wheel having play. Although, I had a similar problem with the Neon I circle track race with, and it turned out to be some drum brake shoes gone bad. I know not all Neons of that year have rear drum brakes, but if so, may be something to check. When I jacked mine up, and spun the wheel several times, sometimes it would lock up. Took it apart(wheel and drum off), and brake shoe pieces fell out. You'll have to do that anyway to get to the wheel bearing... Good luck!

Yes, it was the wheel bearing hub assembly.
