Default Cam thrust plate ques.

I am trying to remember how the thrust plate goes on my 340. I recall when I took it off a few years ago(the project has stopped and restarted a few times)looking at the plate from the front, the top left bolt had a hole drilled in it for timing chain lubrication. I lost the bolt and I look it up in my mopar books and they show the bottom right bolt missing and a chain oil tab on the left bottom bolt. Which is correct?

We use four bolts and no tab on our race engines, so it does not really matter, unless it's a restore project. Then it's two bolts on top and one on the lower right looking at the block.

I found upon disassembly of my motor that the bolt that was supposed to be drilled wasnt, and there was no tab either, but I had little if any chain wear so dont really know how important it was. I decided it was easier to put one bolt in the drill press vise and drill it through than go to the junkyard and pull the front of a smallblock apart for that bolt. maybe you could get it from your local mp parts dealer tho?

Most don't have any bolts with any holes in them. I've only seen them on a few of the older engines.

Thumbs up drilled bolt location

hope i can help clarify this topic. i just went out to garage to confirm, with one 340 on the engine stand and i also brought in the how to rebuild your smallblock book by don taylor+larry hofer. earlier i looked through my 69 dart manual and it skipped around, chapter to chapter. i also perused my book on rebuilding smallblocks by larry shepard. i thought about replying by memory but that could be dangerous, laff. anyways,.....here is what i can relate to you....i hope it helps. page114, trust plate installation......reads like this.........to be correct, look for the side with two 3/4 diameter rough spots near the outermost edges. these go towards the block. the bolt with a hole drilled through it goes in the UPPER ,PASSENGER -SIDE BOLT HOLE---TOP LEFT,LOOKING AT THE FRONT OF THE BLOCK. THIS BOLT ALLOWS OIL TO DRAIN FROM THE VALLEY ONTO THE TIMING CHAIN. SOME ENGINES USE A SMALL DRIP RAIL PAN RATHER THAN THE HOLLOW BOLT. IT GOES IN THE SAME LOCATION. TORQUE THE FOUR BOLTS 10 FT LBS. that is word for word from bottom right of page 114..........i know i have used this in my 340,s.hope it helps! my 340"s have all been nothing later than a 1970.
