Default 440 auto to 4 spd swap - crank ?

I heard that you need to drill out a hole for the pilot bearing when doing this swap. Does anyone have experience with this? Can the crank be drilled without taking apart the motor?
Thanks

Gary

I had the same problem with the 383 in my Challenger. However, instead of drilling the crank, I cut off part of the input shaft on the 4-speed. I don't remember how much I cut off, but it wasnt much. Anyhow, it was worked perfectly fine for over 30k miles.

Exclamation if its a steel crank motor

they are partially drilled.Smaller hole but centered.Look at your input shaft for a wear pattern.with a side grinder remove the section in front of the wear pattern.Chamfer the front edge next and take your pilot shaft bushing down enough to fit in the smaller hole in the back of the crank.A lathe is nice but I have done then on a bench grinder. They get thin.dont crack it.Buy 2 or 3,they are cheap.

I've heard that Napa makes a pilot bushing specifically for this swap.
It's a little smaller in O.D., to fit the smaller crank bore.

The other fix (do not resort to chopping on your input shaft)
is to order Mopar's late model pilot bearing. It's a large sealed
caged ball bearing assy. that press-fits into the large recess
in the end of the crank where the torque converter hub normally
sits. Pretty trick, and even better than the original bushing.
Fits any crank.

thanks guys, sounds like the late model bearing from mopar is the way to go. I'm glad I don't have to pull apart the motor to do the swap. Now I just have to track down the correct part #.

Lightbulb all I know is

the ones I have done the input shaft is too long for the shallow hole in the crank and you have to bob it off.It will still work in a regular crank if need be.
