Camshaft Question.
I am replacing the camshaft in a 74 charger. It has a flat lobe on the #6 exhaust and continues to wear the bottom of the lifter. I would like to replace it with the same purple shaft cam. On the cam in the area that is painted purple there is a four digit number (1103). Can some one please tell me how to identify this camshaft correctly? I would really appreciate any help you guys can offer. Also, I was wondering is there possibly an oiling problem with this engine, or is it more likely just a faulty camshaft. Thanks.
Upon closer examination, I have found another number on the rear end of the cam. The number is 898330. Thanks again. |

What engine do you have?My DC book doesnt show any 4 digit numbers in cams, mabeye there is another number somewhere else on it,thats more than likely a casting number.Cam lobes are lubricated from the oil thats comes out of the sides of the rods, there is a spec for side clearence, look on the thread purple shafted, there is another member having similar problems.

The most positive method would be to use a magnetic base dial indicator on the spring retainer keeping in mind the hyd rockers are really not 1.5 so the reading will be a little short. Measure several and then average it out. You could measure at the pushrod end (more difficult) and then multiply by 1.5. If mechanical you add clearance to lift measurement for total as advertised. There is enough difference (like .484 to .509 on hyd's for instance) for you to be fairly certain. Same if the cam is out, measure (mike) base lobe and max lift, subtract to get the diff and multiply by 1.5 for total. Again, add clearance if mech.
