Default tranny opinions

hey guys, its been awhile since i've posted. It's now time to replace the tired 904 in my '74 360 duster. I want a tranny that is stronger and better geared. Something to get me off the line quicker. nothing to radical because this is a street car and i'm on a budget. I would also at this time like to replace my rear end. Any suggestions there would be great to. Again I want something to get me off the line, but still allow me to drive on the highway at 65 mph without the engine being wound up to 4K the whole time. Thanks guys, i look forward to reading your suggestions. Oh ya, the tranny i have now is a 904 automatic. I dont think I want to make the plunge into converting this to a floor shift standard. Unless you have a cheap and easy way of doing that. The engine is a 360 .030, edelbrock 600 cfm carb and performer intake, 10:1 CR, msd 6A and msd dist., comp cam 212/212 @.050 lift .440/.440, hedman hedders to flowmaster. The current rear is an 8 1/4 with 3.23 gears.

The 8 1/4 should be strong enough for a duster.Might consider 3.55s for better launch, you can always install a taller tire for road trips.Dump the ol 904 and find a good 727,driveshaft yokes are different so try to get the driveshaft with the trans. If your existing converter is counterweighted you need to do the same with the replacement.

You might consider changing to an '81 or later 904 with the lower gear set. This will give you a better launch without sacrificing freeway cruising.

When correctly built, the 998 and 999 versions of the 904 are plenty stout for a mild 360.

How expensive do these things usually run? I'm just a poor lowly college kid trying to make his car cooler. HEHE

IMo this car could use;
a higher stall converter, 2000 stall.
A newer 904 trans. The units that John was talking about with a deeper first gear will do nice. Mostly seen as lock up converter style, Mopar sells hi-stall lock up converters to match. So theres no need to get crazy looking gor a non-lock up style tranny.
3.55's. The 8-1/4 rear is fine. 26 inch tire max. Like a 235/60/15.
Also, I would prefer an induction change. Ethier the ol'DWC set up or a 650-700 cfm Holley over the Edel. carb. on top a Stealth/RPM or even a M-1 dual plane.
If you consider a cam change, a Comp XE 262 or 268 max size. It'll work well with the above stall.
Check Summit/Jegs and Mancini racing for prices.

Does anybody know anything about Streetfighter trannys. I'm not sure if they are more race than street oriented. But I heard that they are nice.

I dont know if this will help or not, but here we go.My wifes 66 Barracuda,
360, ported heads,480 Luniti cam,a nos set of headman headers in to 2 1/2 with flowmasters,904 with 999 gear set,2200 stall,8 1/4 with 3:55s and 275-60s has taken a POUNDING for allmost 7 (yes thats 7) Years the only problem I had was getting the trans to make me happy at first. Now we just take it out and pound on it! I can hardley wait for the snow to melt !!!

They are the best around. We have used several of them over the years in many cars. Best street tranny around and TCI can build you a custom race tranny if that's what you need. Matter of fact I have a fresh street fighter sitting in the shop right now. You can check them out at www.tciauto.com . Just make sure to stay away from the cheap b&m crap.

Call some one who build Torqueflites, be it Andrews Racing Trans or CRT.

Id stick with the 904. They can handle plenty of power and take 18 horse less to spin then a 727. they 2.77 1st gear sets are around $150 You'l pay twice that for a 727 low gear set.

Plus you'll save cash on not having to buy another core or drive shaft.

The MP 166 or 175K converters work good for a mild street car and are cheap.

I concur with fastback - a low-first-gear 904 can be quite reliable behind your 360 and you retain the same external dimensions. If you don't mind shortening driveshafts and fabbing rear mounts then a properly-done A500 will give you a reliable overdrive.(Think low first gear + 3.73's AND good highway mileage) You need to decide on lock-up or non-lock-up as the converter must match the trans. Most low-first trannys (998-999) are lock-ups as are the A-500's. SMR Transmissions (www.smrtrans.com) are pretty familiar with these trannys, as are the folks referred to by fastback. I've been running a 998 lock-up in my mild 360 Mirada for 4 years with no problems and it was built without much trickery by the shop that has done the cop-car trans. work for the R.C.M.P. in Vancouver for years. They basically built me a cop-car unit and it works fine. Cheers

Moraycen, where on earth did you get a NOS set of Hedman headers for that 66? Im assuming that the OS is Old Stock, as in older than the Hustler fenderwell design? I really liked my 340/904 and 3.91's in my '65 Barracuda.

I managed to score them off Ebay for $80.00 the guy dident know what they were for!!!! They came in 3 parts per side and all go under chassis
One lucky mf I would say !! I do have an old Popular Hot Rodding (May 1965) that shows that there was quite a few header companys that did make headers for the early "A" bodys.

ya, tell me about it. I had to put the car on hold for a while for school, now I'm getting ready for this summer and putting work and money into it again. I think I'm going to go the expensive but nice route and work with tci. From everyone I've talked to about them, they are great trannys.
