Default today, we started workin on her

we took out the radiator, took all the accesories off the front, unbolted the headers, took the quadrajet carb off, and unhooked the wiring harness. Me and my buddy did all that in about an hour and a half time, b.s.'in the whole time too, so tomorrow all we should have to do is take off the starter, unbolt the mounts, and take the bolts out that hold the engine to the tranny, and we should be yankin the ole 318 out of her tomorrow, then i will pull the pan, and we can figure out exactly what we got goin. i will keep yall posted.

Default we got a mess

she actually has two blown rods, one went down and out, and one went up and in. I think the block is gonna be salvageable (sp), but i need a new crank, rods, and pistons. THe rod that bent up and in that piston went down so far it wedged itslef on the crankshaft. THat motor was fairly newly rebuilt too, the pistons are stamped .030, and there aint much carbon on top of them. Im thinkin i could rebuild the bottom end, throw it back together, and then do more with it later. Can you safely bore a 318 .040 over, i might do that just to be safe. Also, i thought about maybe just still puttin my cam in there, and keepin the heads the way they are, cuz everything is fairly new. i cant believe that moron blew that thing up. we are gonna take the motor fully apart later today.

IT will go .040 over, but most likely wnat need to as long as there is no cylinder damage. Just rehone it. You need to find out why it blew ebfore you go any farther. Did you check the torqur on the other rod bolts on disassembly? Did you plastigauge those too? Have you checked for bolt stretch, etc. etc. etc ??

Default most of that probly wont matter

i am gonna have to get a new crank and set of rods anyways, so i dont know if the guy that put the motor together last time didnt know what he was doin, or what. I am contemplating just gettin a short block from someone and ploppin my heads back on, the heads still look good. I am weighing the costs, but i might just still get a 360 if its gonna be cheaper or close to the same price to rebuild. The thing that sucks is i gotta get a whole new rotating assembly, and a new pan, so it would be better if i could get a cheap 318 for parts, but if its gonna cost me as much to put my humpty-dumpty 318 together again as it will to just rebuild a complete, hole-less, 360, then i will probly get me a 360. I am still searchin though, i will give updates. I am also gonna need a new front driveshaft, we noticed it is real wobbly where the yoke and the shaft come together.

That's common on the drive shaft thing. Teh 360 and 318 will cost you about the same to build, so go with more tq and hp with a 360.
