4-hole adaptor TQ experiment results
I bolted on a TRD-2034 1" 4-hole adaptor today which I had modified the mounting holes so I could invert it. I was wanting to see if any low end & throttle response could be gained. I also blended the holes more to hopefully create better airflow. It's actually made to adapt a squarebore carb to a spreadbore manifold. The car didn't feel as responsive and make as much power as the open spacer adaptor. So my conclusion is on a Performer RPM manifold which is a dual plane the open spacer works best with a TQ carb. I thought as I mounted the 4-hole that I might be choking the 850cfm carb too much and I think that's what happened basically. The powder blasted TQ carb I just rebuilt ran great with 98/143 jets and 65/53/40 metering rods and .031 squirters. I'll be Ebaying some of these blasted & tested carbs in the near future for half of what a new Holley or Edelbrock would cost.

Thanks for the info. I have said this before that a spacer can hurt if it's in the wrong combo. I really do not like the adapters to mate a T-Q to a sqaure bore intake. I see the necking down as a hinderance on the carb.
I think it's a shame Edel. didn't leave enuff meat there to carve out a area for the T-Q. They did it for the Chevy's anf the Rochesters and there new Victor for the big block MoPars. Why not the s/b MoPars? |

tq adapter
agree, .after seeing posts and pics on moparchat, i stepped up and fabbed my custom aluminum side pieces to allow welding/machining to accept tq,s. now i have the best of both worlds,...........avs, afb, therms,....you name it.! my antique ld 340 accepts them all. carb changes?..........hmmmm. give me 30 minutes, you turn the key. starts?...yes?tuning, ...more,....tranny adjustment?.we have to drive.............big grin!

The four hole phenolic resign spacer works well with a TQ on a stock cast dual plane. It just depends on what the engine needs.

DW;
Where did you get a 4 hole spacer for a T-Q? |

THey were stock on some of the police cars. I got mine when I still worked for the dealer. HAd to replace the lifters on a Trooper car and also found a crack in the intake on the drivers side secondary which is where they usually crack and had to replace that too. IT had a 4 hole phenolic resign spacer on it, so I got the number and ordered one for me too. Gotta love them discounts when you work for a dealer.

spacer height
query 4 dw, phenolic spacer for carb,..........what height/thickness was that police issue ?..........did it interfere with hood clearances? was it used on monacos/furys/ and such?.thanks in advance.

Got it off of a late '80's Gran Fury. IT was a stock piece with stock air cleaner so no clearence issues there. It's roughly 3/4" thick, of course you can adjust it with thicker gaskets stacked on top of each other too.

DWC,
Is there any chance that you could let us know what the part number is for that 4-hole phenolic spacer? Any idea if these are still available from a dealer? |

4-Hole spacers
I used to run two of the 4-hole spacers on top of my stock manifold small block in a Demon. I had no hood interference problems. I picked mine up at the local speed imporium for a buck a piece, circa 1982. I think you can still buy them new from Summit (among others).

That'd be great, THANKS!!
Is there anywhere that pieces of phenolic can be bought and then machined for the TQuad? What exactly is phenolic anyway? Is it just a fancy name for plastic? I was thinking that if you could get it in 1/4" thick sheets, then you essentially tune the spacer to your particular setup by adding/subtracting layers of phenolic. What is the reason for using phenolic instead of aluminum? Is it to reduce/eliminate heat transfer from the manifold to the carb? |

I'll go by tomorrow if I don't forget it again and look to see if it has a number on it. IT's still on the racecar. It's basically made of the same stuff your dist. cap is made of. IT is to stop heat transfere to the carb. Matter of fact, it's the same material your fuel bowl is made of.

Same stuff NASA used to make the heat shield on the Apollo re-entry craft too. We have one on display in the Aerospace museum here in San Diego at the moment and when I read that, my first thought was of the good old Thermoquad. Next time someone dogs your carb - tell them it's a byproduct of the space program

we used to stack the open phelonic Pn #3695565 under tqs in old days an casting #3838000 tq intake aint no slouch either. i gave 2 of the spacers to abody guy at the dealer he put them on his Qjet caddy and got 1/1/2 mpg better, funny how things work the were worth like .02 in the quarter on my 71 340 Demon.
