Default Tranmission main seal replacement

I need to change the current Torque converter I have in my 727 transmission. The engine is out of the car. I was told it was a good idea to change the main transmission seal at the same time. Has anyone got some advice on the best procedure for doing this.

Thanks in advance.

Yeah. See that little seal here the shaft comes out of the tranny. Pry it out with a flat head and then tap a new one in with a small hammer. YOur done. Add a little tranny fluid to the converter snout so you don't damage the seal when you put it back in.

A word of caution, after you've tapped the new seal in, shine a flashlight down the hole to be sure the spring surrounding the seal lip hasn't popped off; it does happen. If it pops off it can be seen hanging from the shaft; if left that way it will ruin the front pump.

Question

Why are you repacing it?If the snout looks scored on the old one you might need to replace the pump bushing also, test fit the new one and check for slop before you install the new seal, you can replace the bushing without removing the pump if you are careful.

The seal only cost a couple bucks so why not put in a fresh one while it's down so it does not fail latter on and you have to pull the tranny out the hard way. Call it a little preventive maintenance.

The front pump bushing is the only bushing in the transmission to be staked in place, trying to remove it without removing the pump will leave debris in the pump and the new bushing can't be staked without disassembling the pump.
