Default Don't know what size tires I should run

71 Duster 340 stock wheel well. A-body 8-1/4 with either 3.55 or 3.91s. Won't really do any hiway cruising with the car.

I was thinking of running American Racing Outlaw I's. They have 4" backspace. 15x7s in the front and 15x10s in the back. I don't know what size of tires I should run in the rear? I was thinking p295 50 r15s or p275 60 r15s. But I don't know if they fill fit on the car.

Looking for some feedback on what I should do.

Don't use 50's the profile is too low. A 275 60 on a 10 inch wheel will work best.

I have a 74 duster with a 10in rim and a 295-50-15 tire with no problems, if you want I could pull a wheel to give you the backspace.

if you could tell me the backspace that would be great. I's like to run the 295 50s since I would get a larger footprint and more traction.

You'll get less traction since you gave up the side wall height. It want have the give to take on the shock at launch that a taller side wall will have. Besides your talking about a 1/2 to 1 " diff in width. Not worth the trade off. Go with a 275 60 15 it will do a much better job for you.

DWC is right. Those 50's may look cool but won't hook as good. They are shorter than the 275/60 but wider. The taller tire will hook better.

Ok I guess I was wrong about the traction issue then. The 295s might be too wide to fit anyway. And the taller tire will probably work better with the 3.91 gears too.

Besides a taller tire will also gain foot print as well. If you have a car that will only aloow a narrow tire, you can go as tall asteh fenderwell will allow and that will put more rubber on the road too. Only draw back to this crutch is you will need more gear to go with a taller tire.

i have the 275 60's on my duster with 3.91 and stock 15 by sevenn steelies. hooks great. not as good as slicks do, but, its all good.
anyway, with stock 340 springs, i had to roll the fender lip a hair. the car had been in an accident or three, ao i dont know if it was due to accident damage or the way the factory did it. looks mean as hell, though.

Well for the 275/60s it says the recommended wheel width is 7.5-9.5 so could I use 15x10s with this tire or should I go to a 15x8 wheel with 3-3/4 backspace?

15 by 8 with 3 3/4 will probably be just about right.
may still rub a hair though.

I would use the 15 x 8 or a 9 if you can find them.

BlueDuster

I run 295/50-R15 on 10" rims with 5" backspacing 3.91 gears. I will change for 275/60-R15 next year as the season is pretty well over, I should of went to that size the first time I will try Nitto 555R.

BlueDuster,

I just switched to p205 55 r 15 bfg radial T/A for the front on American Racing 200s 15X7X3.75.

On the rear I went with 235 60 r15 bfg Drag Radials with American Racing 200s 15x8x4

The fronts probably coulda been bigger but I worried that going from 14" to 15" might have clearance issues when turning tightly so I found the 205 55s were the same height as the 14" tires I had been running prior to the switch. I feel the road a bit more with 55s on the front, and to tell the truth, I like the feeling.

The rear tires fill out the wheelwell just about perfectly in my opinion, but that's just my opinion. There is about 1/2" clearance to the wheelwell lip, that has not been rolled so you prolly could roll the lip and get a bigger tire in there but dont know how much. I haven't measured my rear from flange to flange yet to make sure its standard a body dimensions so yours may be different. Double check with some like tires and wheels for fitment if you possibly can. Maybe a friend will have some you could test with? So far, I love the drag radials. The Duster hooks like it never did before, it literally jumps now instead of cooking the hides to smithereens. The soft compound tires really have helped this car tremendously.

Will attach a couple of shots, a pic is worth a thousand words.
