define "kill"
does it slow the motor down till it stalls like dragging or does it run rough and splutter cause that sounds like a vaccum leak if it stalls when you hit the brakes

it drags the motor down. it tries to keep going forward. I can use the brakes in neutral or park and it does not effect the engine rpms.

This is my first real auto trans (pos subaru dosnt count) so i dont know much about them. i need to pick up the 727 manual.

A failed sprag in the converter will cause a near lockup condition that can kill the motor when the transmission is placed in gear.

A problem with the engine tuneup will do the same thing. Can you keep the engine running if you brake with your left foot and throttle with the right?

the engine is running ok but not great, it has been setting for 6mo. 650 edelbrock on a stock 400 bb. the breaks realy suck, drums all around. I made sure using the breaks wouldnt kill the engine in park so no vaccume leak.

I bet your right about the sprag. I just bought this truck so i dont know the history. barly would idle when i got it so i just figured that was killing it. Oh well 500 bucks so no big loss .
