Default 284/484 cam...100k motor

Read through Cam FAQ . Really a camshaft virgin. Found recommendations for Purple shaft 284/484 MP cam for stock 360.
Installed 360 4bbl from '84 truck in '72 Dart. 100,00mi motor. Good oil pressure ,no smoke.
Question...Would this cam be too much for motor. Or should I dial back selection to something milder or stock?

Hey Stryke;

A 4bbl cam from a '84 truck (Or car) is if I remember right only a 260 duration kind of cam. A early 340 /360 4bbl. is the larger one you would want.
On the engine, I would say so long as the oil consumption is ultra low or nil, it could work out ok. It has gone both ways for me.
Of course things like blow by/ring seal head/valve seals all get a little streched in this exercise.
Valves reach longer. Theres a little more stress in the engine due to bigger output.
I have not read FAQ in awhile. So I don't know how you came to the recomended cam of 284/.484. This cam should be used with other HI-PO parts. Hi-rise dual plane, headers, 2.02 - 1.60 valves, pocket ported heads would be real good to use, etc...
It could be used with a stock engine but the cam would not be able to work to it's potental.
Whats the rest of the details on the car/engine combo?

'84 truck 360. Stock 4bbl intake, Edelbrock carb, Hooker comp. headers, TTI 2 1/2 exhaust. Gonna drop cam selection back to 280/474 MP Purple shaft. Would like a bump in performance, but don't want to push my luck.

I think you'll like that cam in there over the 284. Grab the springs to match.

Just for your info, Scoggins Dickey had the best prices on Mopar Cam and Lifter Kits. Their website is SDPC2000.com. You'll have to call and ask since they show mostly chevy stuff in the catalogue.

go with a comp 480 280 or a comp 460 260 the mopar cams are soft and tend to wipe if you dont stroke them just right during the break in period ive used the 480 in highr milage engines then yours never had a problem if the oil pressure is good and it dosent use any oil and the cylnder pressure is good go for it use the stock springs to break the cam in then use compressed air in the cylnders to hold the valves closed and change the springs out then go have fun
