cry2 B-body steering box?

I was looking under the hood of the charger today to see how much clearance there was for the headers I was planning to order, when I noticed my steering box was covered with fluid. Upon further investigation it apears to be leaking out the top where the coupler goes on the splined shaft also this shaft moves in&out a 1/4" as I turn the steering wheel back&forth making a clunking noise, there is no movement at the tires with a 1/4th of a turn of the wheel. So now the headers are on the back burner while I address this new problem. What latter model body styles(that I may be able to find in a salvage yard)will interchange with my 72 if any? Would it be cheaper to have a machine shop rebuild my box? Thanks Triggerbear

Besides another B body, I don't know. Perhaps a stroll through a year one catolog to see if there are different part numbers could help. There not cheap rebuilt through Y1.

Its a ball roller if I remember right, once you get the seal off, there should be an adjustment collar with a slot or some holes in it to turn it with.If you purshase a seal kit,it will have an exploded diagram for reference.

The firm feel site sudjests on 72 and older cars you can install a 73or newer box in order to save money on replacment pitman arms so perhaps I might find something in one of the junkyards around here.

As far as I know, all A,B and E bodies use the same boxes.Believe it or not, a B-body van uses the same box. You didn't mention manual or power, but if you have a manual box, and want a higher ratio for easier steering, check the B-vans. I think the 3/4 ton B200 van is where you want to look, but to be sure, make sure the one you find has more steering wheel turns lock-to-lock than your current one. The mopar chassis book might give you some more info on interchangability of boxes.

hope that helps!

Unless, of course, you drive it primarily on the street, let the old lady drive it, have wide front tires, like to park somewhere other than the north 40 in parking lots, etc, etc. Lots of reasons to want a higher ratio manual box. I believe most people ask questions here wanting to get as many ideas as possible. Consider my two cents worth thrown into the pot, do with it what you will.

Ratio really wont make it any harder to steer. It's really in your caster set up. We work a lot with that on our race cars to get them to turn.

Really? Than why do lower ratio gears in your axle make your car take off easier? That's why the vans have manual boxes with a lower ratio (higher numerically), they are heavier, thus, harder to steer. Caster will help some, but if you go too far trying to help steering, the vehicle will be very squirrely.

I found a box today,it was from advance $119.00+$45.00core,new pitman arm$45.00 these are for 73 model as the 72 parts were almost $200.00 higher.I might have to change to a 73 idler arm when I make the swap Firmfeel inc. list different part#s and are who suggested going to later year parts. still for around $200 I'll be replacing a worn box and both arms. Thanks for everyones input Triggerbear
