Default Fuel filter... quick

Quickie for ya... for mechanical fuel pump, should the inline filter go directly BEFORE the pump, directly AFTER the pump, or close to the carb?

And if I want to change to the 3 prong bypass type filter, where should it go? After the pump, I would assume...

This is all because my 451 started intermittently surging and leaning WAY out on the highway at 2600 RPM (eddy fuel meter bounced from normal 13:1 to 15:1+). Pretty sure it's a cracked hose before the pump... hard to diagnose since it only does it once in a while.

Thanks guys!

Question

If you plan on returning from the filter it has to be pressurized. If you run a regular one it should be at the highest point in the line before the carb.Do you run a vented cap?

I dont know if I read it here or somewhere else, but from what I understood on a mechanical pump to have the filter before it only hurts pressure(or suffin like that), and it would be better to have it after due to the mechanical filter not having parts that will get clogged from dirty fuel like a electronic fuel filter(becuase of the vanes and internal parts).

So....in essence, if it was a electric fuel pump, better to have it before to protect the pump.....if it is mechanical....after the pump.

Default fuel filter location

in the 1972 Plymouth book it states that for a 318 the filter goes before the pump. For a 340 the filter goes after the pump. It offers no explaination. Neither of these applications has the third vent connection.

Default Thanks

Thanks, guys. I am in fact running a vented cap. I think I'll just stick with that and forget a return line. Right now my 451 has the filter before the pump and my other 318 has it after the pump. My 318 hasn't had any problems in 2+ years, so I think I'll go with after the pump, halfway to the carb.
