Axel and brake question

I have an a-body 8 3/4 rear end that I want to upgrade the axles to large bolt patern. I figured I buy new axleshafts from moser with new green bearings. now the question is what about the brake drums? If they are 10inch drums will the drums from an E or B body work?

No, the 8 3/4" A-body rear axle had it's own brakes with very narrow rear brakes. I believe they were 1.75"? Actually, I have thought about the A-body 8 3/4" being the same housing as in '65 B-bodies made narrower with different brakes and axles, but am really not sure about this "theory". But get complete brakes with backing plates out of any '65 & newer 8 3/4, 8 1/4" or even at least '73&up 7 1/4" rear axle with the 4.5" bolt pattern and get the axles that fit them. The distance between the bearing and the flange is bigger, so you will end up with a little wider rear if you use the stock width housing.

I have a 7 1/4 large bolt rear end. So You are saying that those brakes will swap onto an 8 3/4?

I'd just go rear disc. IT will cost you about the same and it will stop you a lot quicker. Not to mention that it will lower your unsprung weight. That's always a plus.

Really?! I would thikn an 8,3/4 is an 8,3/4 is an 8,3/4. Worst case, swap of backin plates and hardware would settle the score on a swap.

Cant do the disc brake thing, I don't want to blow the limited budget on this dart. It will be a /6 daily driver for now. I have a set of new brakes and hardware on a 7 1/4 rear and if the brakes will swap over I'd rather do that. I already pissed away $400 out of the $1000 budget on the interior and new rear quarters. I still have to rebuild the front suspension and paint the car with the remaining $600. You can see how far I got with it so far on www.breakstuffracing.com

The paint for the duster set me back $300 for PPG base and clear. I wouldn't let maaco paint my Ol'ladys nails.
As for the trunk, I don't know how big a sheep is, Maybe I'll swing on down to the "It's all relative" state and see you DWC and you can see how many of your girlfriends fit.

I went out to the wrecking yard and got a set of 11 x 3 brakes...drums and back plates off a 76 Cordova. That was back in the 1988........unless something changed...you can upgrade the brakes just do it as a unit.

The brakes are on my 69 Barracuda....

Default Rear axel's

I remember a while back that the axel mfg. offer the axels in different lengths according to which brakes you have. Same price but different length. It makes sense that if brakes are wider, the wheel spacing will be different. Check on that.

Just thinking out loud.

Question Tar Baby?

Just Curious. There was a race car a long time ago, that ran at Aquasco Speedway, that was named "Tar Baby". I know this is a long shot, but are you kin to anyone associated with that car?

Default No.

My nickname came from when I was a teen. A cousin that couldn't say Carl due to a speech impediment. Started as Tarr, went to Tarr Baby and finally to Tarrbabe. Sorry.
There use to be a car locally that ran under Mr. Mudd. I always liked that name. 6 cy 55 Chevy that ran Gas class. He could jump a coke bottle starting off and not touch it. Loved it.

Some questoinable comments on a critical safety item that could cause a fellow moparite to damage their car or suffer bodily injury. 1. Disc brakes will NOT stop faster than drums. 2. Drilling axles and drums provide marginal safety.

provide excellent information on conversions.
I have personall pulled the backing plates off any Mopar equipped with 10x2 1\2" brakes and installed them on a A-body 8 3\4" rear end, the axles were shortened at Sutton Engineering and Non-adjustable axle bearings installed. Currently three A-bodies are equipped with this method with satisfactory results.
