OK folks, heres one for you. Anybody remember a racing team back in the '60s that used a Torqueflight with a clutch/pressure plate setup? I saw the article years ago in an old magazine and always wondered about it. The case was notched on the left side for the clutch hardware. At the time, it seemed like the best of both worlds. I guess that this was before the stall converters really came into their own. Just curious about the setup. Any thoughts or comments? RR

maybe 13 or 14 years ago, a guy in a neighboring town had a Camaro Super Slow with a similar set-up. i was a teen so i didnt really know any better, but he called it a Ram Coupler...after seeing his car, everyone wanted one, but i never heard another word about it. i forgot all about that until you mentioned it.

I have always thought that driving a clutch flite would be so cool. Although I am nit sure the Guts could hold up to that kind of abuse. And I am sure that converter technology has gotten so much better to make it not necessary.

We considered using a clutch flite back in 1976.It really was at the time, the best of both worlds. The "Mopar Missle" (Chrysler factory test car)had a 6 speed clutch flite they were evaluating. It was 2 727's combined together.A lot of the Pro Stocks of the early 70's used this, mostly the drivers that couldn't shift a Mopar 4-speed as well as Sox,Landy,Leal etc.The Ramchargers used a clutch flite also for a while. After the rule change and Lenco's were allowed,it kid of went away. The old gas classes of the 70's used it too.The standard unit was made by B&M,with a Lakewood scattershield bolted to where the 727 bellhousing used to be.The only time you used the clutch was when you launched the car,and again after the run.Other than that, you shifted it like a manual valve body TorqueFlite of today. With the advent of the transbrake today, you basically have the same result as using a clutch flite as in the old days.

Thumbs up

Seen one in a 80's model mustang at 1/8 mile track about 13 years ago. Car ran 6.0's with 1.20 60'times.He said it had been in for about 2 years with out failure. Once again CHRYSLER was ahead of the game!!!
