Timing Issues???????
I have a 73 dodge truck with a 318 in it. It has the performance electronic ignition kit, summit street coil, and orange ignition module. Also it has an Edelbrock performer intake wit a Holly 600 4 barrel carb.
The prob im having is that it keeps backfiring through the carb and it tries to stay running when you turn the key off. What causes this and what is the correct ignition timing for my set up. Thanks |

A back fire is a lean condition.
Run on is a good question. That could be a poor grade of gas/insuffiecent octane, leaking carb.... Timing is 2-1/2B (Man trans), TDC (Auto), idle speed 750 (Man trans)) 700 (Auto). as per chiltons for cars, 1973 addition in the Dodge Plymouth section. |

OK Ill try adjusting the timing, Ive checked the carb and havent found any leaks, I always run 93 octane or higher. Could it be Timing that is to far advanced. Right now it is at 7 btc

back fire
could also be caused by tuliped valves, bent/missing pushrods, weak valve springs, wrong rocker arms, bad timing chain.

back fire
could also be caused by tuliped valves, bent/missing pushrods, weak valve springs, wrong rocker arms, bad timing chain.the run-on can be due to carbon build up on the pistons, sharp edges in the chamber getting red hot and firing the fuel in the intake charge

With the valves and pushrods I know I would have to replace them. As far as the pistons the motor has about 30,000 miles on it. How would I fix the sharp edges getting red hot and doing what you said

Sharp edges apear on the pistons valve relief. So take'em out and grind them smooth.
Other places would be in the head and valves. Though valves should not be the problem for hot spots. Take off the head and smoothit out. Sound worth it? |

A simple check: Your firing order! Easier to check than your piston tops. Sounds dumb, but a motor will run wired ass backwards, not very good, but it will. Clockwise 18436572. Youll get 2 good fires (1-6) but the rest will be off.

The firing order is right as per the manual I bought for the truck. I think I checked it about 10 times just to be sure so I could rule that out. It is the same as you listed above. ( pretty sure without checking the book )

Then I would check the timing. TDC the No. 1 and look at your mark and rotor position.
