Help Which Clutch??

Ok I have a 77-78 ish OD 4-spd. It is planned to go into a 66 Barracuda. I have the flywheel and clutch setup that fits within the bell housing. (lots of surface rust) I hope the rust can be cleaned up ok. The big thing is what size clutch do I need. The car is a 273. So I think those came with a 9.5 or 9.25 clutch? Would the bigger 10.5 clutch fit? Also I have the bad clutch the came with the flywheel. How do you measure the flywheel? From teeth to teeth or across the area where the clutch rides. A friend of mine brought another flywheel over and it was too big for the bellhousing? How is the clutch measured? The car was orginally a 3 on the tree. I have the floor hump Z-bar and the pedals were already int he car. So this clutch thing is holding me up. The service manual lists it as a 9.5" and all the aftermarket says "w/10-1/2 CLUTCH" .Thanks -Bob

I was checking new flywheels at summit. What tooth count do i need 130 or 143? Whats the difference, other than 13 teeth? If the flywheel I have works, i will deffinately get it resurfaced. -Bob

Duh!! Man brain quit working. Thanks. If I have the wrong flywheel, is there a different starter, or? I know the hemi's had a bigger flywheel, is that the 143 tooth? If so then the 130's should be fairly likely what you will end up with grabbing one from a boneyard?

hello, the 273 had a 12" diameter flywheel and 9.5 clutch from the factory.
the 130 tooth/ 13" diameter flywheel is common to 318, 340,383. to install this will require a bellhousing from a 340/360/ 318. the flwheels are measured from outside to outside.the 13" flywheel and proper bellhousing is a bolt in deal. with the O.D. trans, you will need one with the larger center hole in it. you could call mcleod clutch for a 9.5 clutch, drop in deal then.
they show a clutch for a 225 six, should be a bolt up unit. long time ago, I put a six cylinder clutch behind my 273, worked just fine. just food for thought.

Thanks, wasn't sure if a /6 clutch would have enough grip. The tranny came with the bellhousing. I will have to measure the flywheel to make sure which one I got. Thanks again.

hello, you have the correct bellhousing, then it will require the 13"/130 tooth
flywheel and the 10.5 clutch. as for a clutch, I prefer the mcleod B&B hat/with the long fingers. this is the clutch. it's low pedal pressure, has some C/W to help it grab and releases clean. in the 66 car, install a brace from the master cylinder to the shock tower. this will prevent the firewall from flexing. clutch will work much better also. good luck,

Thanks, just measured the clutch 10.5 across the friction area, and the flywheel is just under 13, like 12 3/4-7/8. Is the brace necessary? Any kind of scrap metal long enough will work right? I have a 1" round tube in the scrap metal pile. Thanks again -Bob
