I have a '79 Dodge D150 Stepside. It has a 318 2-bbl. I would like to upgrade the performance. It make about 155 hp stock. I would like to make about 220-230 hp or more p if I could. I plan on a 4-bbl M-1 intake, 625 cfm Carter, Hedman headers, 2-1/2 exhaust with Cherry Bomb turbo mufflers.I would like to swap 360 heads also and shave the heads to raise the compression.Does this sound like a worthy combination?Does anyone have any other suggestions.

Thumbs up

Hi and welcome to the chat. I hope when you are refering to the MP M-1 intake you are using the 2-plane intake not the single plane. I like the Edelbrock Performer better in this application, I feel it is a better bottom end intake than the M-1. The 625 carb is a good choice. Using the 360 heads on this engine may drop your compression ratio due to the chamber size being bigger to accomodate the larger bore of the 360. Why not just put the 360 intake valve in the 318 heads? I am a big fan of using the 340 hi-po cam in this application, it relly wakes the 318 up. Not sure about the exhaust, dual 2 1/2 may be too large. You might want to drop to 2 1/4. Mufflers are a matter of personal choice, I tend to really like the 3-chamber Flo-Masters on a street engine. For headers stay with a 1 5/8 primary tube. Also pay attention to your distributer timing. I've seen stockers that are somewhat worn advancing as much as 50 degrees total at crusing speeds. This is way too much. You want about 34-36 degrees all in by 2500 rpm using 8-10 degrees inital at the crankshaft. Good luck with your project and welcome aboard.

find a set of 85 up, (magnum engines not included)swirlport closed chamber heads. they can be had cheap! they will bring your compresion up close to a full pt. add a stock 340 cam or almost any cam with about 450 lift and a set of headers, 1 5/8 sounds about right. you should pick up about 50 to 60 horse power! no guessing about it, a few mags have done this swap all with the above results, give or take 5 h.p. i've done this one myself, a real eye opener! do this and you will not disapointed

I'll tell you what a friend of mine did with his 318 with almost no money. He (we) took a '69 318 shortblock, added full groove bearings, stock oil pump, a set of stock '72 360 heads (not J heads) and a 284 degree 0.484" lift Purple Shaft cam. An old set of headers, 2-1/4" pipe, 3 chamber Flowmasters with no tailpipes. We put this motor in his '70 Dart swinger with a 4 speed and 3.91 Sure Grip gears. After playing with several carbs (TQ, small block and big block AVS's), we settled on a big block AVS carb with an LD4B intake. Shifting at 6500-7000 rpms, he runs 13.6 at 100 mph. Low compression, light rods, too much cam, it still hasn't blown up, somehow. Best running 318 I've ever seen. If he'd listen to me and put some compression in the motor and port the heads, he'd be in the 12's.
All this might be a bit much for a truck, but I wanted to give you an idea of the low-buck potential. You might try a similar setup with a milder cam (260-268 Purple Shaft) and cut down heads for 9 to 1 compression.

The only thing I can't agree with is the carb. I tried to run a Holley 4011 650 cfm spreadbore on my 318 and it was too much carb for the engine. Ran rich no matter what I did to the mixture and would either bog or gurgle depending on the rpm. I ran a Holley 600 cfm 4160 and the car has ran great every since. My car does have stock compression and 2 barrel heads though, so that could be the problem. Just my 2 cents worth. cruzerjd

the 360 heads with either the 1.88's or 2.02's will help and use the mp rv cam or the mp 464 hyd.
the edlie dual plane with a 600 cmf vac sec holley carb works good on this combo.
matck port the heads and intake to the mp race gaskets.

if you have the motor out of the truck and having it rebuilt have the deck of the block squared and cut .020 to help raise the cr some.
then cut the heads also to raise the cr to a true 9-1
if you're willing to run premium fuel you can raise the cr to 9.5-1 or even a little higher.

if using a new chain install the cam 4 degrees advanced and if and old or used chain install it 2 degrees advanced.

measure and cc everything to make sure you get a true cr reading. thats the key to making the combo work along with the heads being match ported.
