Disassembling SS springs
Ok I got a set of the 3800 lb SS springs for an old Diplomat project. Well that never took off. I need springs for our 66 Cuda, so can I take a couple of the leafs from the SS and replace some worn out ones on the 66? The 66 springs are basically bending backwards. No weight in car either. Kinda hesitate to drive it like that. I was thinking of replacing the mounting leaf, top spring and every other leaf. I'm heading more towards handling so I dont want to raise the car a whole lot. Just want to know if the SS are useable like this. If not I will have to save some $$ for the espos. I would perfer to use the SS as theyre "free" Thanks -Bo

have you thought of rearcing ss springs
Hi
Busy night at work LOL, instaid of removing springs I would remove spring rate by have them dearced. Of cource the only shop I know that can do that is in modesto. Of cource as you will use it for handling not drag racing then windup will not be that big of a deal. I am sugesting keeping all the springs to limit windup. Did you get that 4 speed in? no 4-spd yet, got all parts, just need a "new" clutch. Actually cold here. so laying on the ground is not fun now. I got the those SS laying around and was thinking of free projects I could do to save time. Yeah real busy at work!

You can NOT remove spring rate by de arching a spring. Only way to change the spring rate is to make thinner or thicker leaves or change the number and or lenght of the leaves.
I would not disassemble them for the simple reason you will never know what spring rate you have. If it's too stiff the car will be loose theough a corner and if they are too soft the car will push like a snow plow in a corner. Best thing to do is sell them and get a new set of Landrum springs. That's what we use on most street and race cars we run. By the way, for better handling, Mopars like soft T bars and springs with large sway bars and agressive shocks. You will get more out of a street car with large sway bars and agressive shocks than you ever will with a spring and T bar change. |
