? on Size of Stall Converter
I have a 66 Barracuda that I'm trying to finish up for the summer. What stall do I need for this car that is street and strip use?
Specs are as followes engine - 340, 10:1 compression, single plane, 750 Holey, 202x heads some headwork, magnum manifolds or if come in soon enough splitfire headers, Lunati solid cam 498 lift 302 dur. trans - 904, shift kit rear end 8.75 3.55 remember street and strip. The car is complete meaning full interior and all, never had it on a scale ,but the title says 3100lbs with 273 V-8, auto and small rear end. |

I hope the A904 holds up. I'd start looking for an A727 pretty soon. Tha'ts a pretty big cam for those gears too. I would contact TCI and get a converter from them. THey'll fix you up with exactly what you need. www.tciauto.com

TCI Yuck.
Dynamic, Turbo Action, Coan,PTC or ATI. probably a 11" or tight 10". the 904 will hold up fine. |

My guess is 3000-3200 but if you have the cam card look on it to see what the power band is and go from there. Example is: 3000-7000 rpm range you'd want a 3000 plus converter. For the street this is getting pretty big but guys run them all the time. With a cam this big you might need it. Another thing to consider is the gear ratio because you don't want a converter that will be slippin all the time below 75 mph. 3:55's and a 28" tire will be running approx. 2800 @60.
As far as the 904 I'm with DWC. I'd look for a 727. Why? Cause you've got a serious HP engine there and I've seen alot of shucked 904's behind engines just like this. Unless the 904 is highly modified of course. But then a low dollar 727 will be cheaper than a highly modded 904. |

call the t/c guys and ask them, stall speed is direcly related to engine torque, a 3500 stall in a 360 could end up being a 2700 stall in a 318. Before i got into women, I had a 74 duster with a mech roller 318 (290/590), 10.5 comp, port o sonic, 894 heads, I learned 2 things in 2 summers, no 904's, no TCI's (i put the engine in a truck for our local dirt track with a cast 340 intake and manifolds, they got maaaaaaaaaaaaaad!)

Axl, my car used to have pretty much the same setup. '65 cuda, '68 X head 340 with Strip Dominator single plane, MP 284/484 cam, Hooker SC headers, 625 Demon carb,3.91 8 4/5 SG rear, Hughes Built 904 and a 2800 convertor. The car is light enough that the rear will break loose before the trans will load up unless you are running slicks and you cant get much under that cars rear wheel wells. I never had a trans problem with that car, broke a flex plate though (non SFI). The 727 takes more HP to run too, overkill for that light car.

Hey thanks for the info guys on that issue, it has helped a quite a bit I think if the car was a heavier bodied car with slicks then it would probably would be an issue of breaking. Hey if it does break it's only money right.
