Right now, I can't remember what company it is that offers bolt in DANA's. I think it MOSER. I'll be corrected by someone in a min. on this, but,

There are 8-3/4 rears that will bolt in. While not plentful, there out there. The more plentyful 8-3/4 rear for the A body is very easy to get correct and stronger axles with the bolt pattern you want, again, from Moser or other companys.
You'll need to change the driveshaft length and spring pads if you get a rear form another body style. Everything else is good to go.

The only advantage of the 8 3\4 over the 8 1\4 is the ability to change center sections or the Timkens bearings if you are a road racer. The 8 3\4 for A-bodies are all equipped with small bolt pattern so an axle change is necessary because all 8 1\4 rears had the large bolt pattern. Unless you are pulling over 400 HP the 8 1\4 will take the abuse and if so the cost of new or resplined axles, drive shaft change will be equal to or more than beefing the 8 1\4.

Your stock axle is plenty strong. The 8 1/4 replaced the 8 3/4 for several reasons. One it has no housing flex by design so you don't break gears, axles splines, and wear carrier bearings of break the caps like an 8 3/4 will. The second reason was cost since the 8 1/4 is cheaper to produce. All you need is a good sure grip and if you like add the Moser C clip eliminator package. Moser also makes axles for them too. We;ve run them both on dirt and in drag cars without any problems at all. Dirt tracks put the most abuse on racing parts than any other form of racing though.

I asked the MP tech line about the 8-14 rear. They said the same thing. About 400 HP is fine. After that, it may not hold well on a street duty car. I also asked about the 8-1/4 rear for the strip. They said due to limited used, though high in abuse, it would last awhile becuase of limited use, IE stright line use only. Where as the constant turning around corners could wear it out faster. They gave no real increase in HP to be OK for the rear in track only, but did say it could handle more.

We run a over 400 hp with ours on the dirt and it held up fine. Dirt track racing puts way more abuse on every part of the car than what you will be doing with it. Never had an problems with the C clip eliminators eitehr.

Yes, I have a '76 Duster with a 360 4 spd all stock with an 8 1/4, 3.55 gear in it Some police cars have them Chargers,RoadRunners 72 and up to 79 along with Aspen R/T's and Super Coupes cam have them too. Trucks also have them. Most any Dakota will have a 3.55 gear and a trac lok that's not as good as the old sure grips though.

They are just not that popular a rear. Everyone is fixed on the 3/4 plus you have to admit if your circle track racing and travel where you need different gears it's a lot ewasier to set up. That's why we use them in most of our cars. I checked Randy's and they do have spools for all the little Dana's though.

The axle in the 8 1/4 uses a C clip to hold it to the axle gear at the carrier. This is it's weakest link if it has one at all. The kit uses a different axle bearing and retainers to hold the axle in instead of this clip.

Randy's Ring and Pinion. If you don't know them, you need to. They have two shops. One here in Franklin about an hour from where I live, but right near where I work and one in Wash. www.ringpinion.com
