roller cams 318 LA engine
what year did chrysler start using roller cams in the 318 I have an engine out of an '86 5th ave with roller cam. the dealer tells me they didn't start using that cam setup until '88, who to believe? I'm trying to squeeze alittle mor power from the engine and am having trouble finding a cam listing . I have NO eletronics or computer on the truck it's going in!

They started about 84 I htink, but some say 82, the earliest ive seen is a 84 block, couldve been a 85. I know wolverine cams make some aftermarket hyd roller, ive used them, they work pretty good. In my oppinion those roller heads arent the best for power, the pushrod hle is in the way, bad. That motor will run good in stock form anyway with headers.

Without going with the expense of a roller, a Comp or Highes Hyd. cam can do wonders.

Stock Roller cams, Philosophical
OK, I know nothing about Mopars after 74, For the most part, I think of post 74 are very dark years for mopar.
But this is the first I have heard about a factory roller cam in a 318. I don't doubt you guys, but can someone explain why the factory would have gone to the expense of installing a roller cam???? Tim Eckert 72 Cuda 360/904 Non-roller cam |

Boy are you behind he times there ... LOL!! First it was emissions reson on the 318 and 360's plus with less friction you get better milage and more power too. They came in everything from police cars to trucks and 5th ave. or just about anthing. The good thing about them is that the lifter bore is much taller and it makes for a great race block as far as stock pieces go.

By the way, after '74 is not the Mopar dark ages. Lots of great hi po cars came out after '74. I own a couple of those ... LOL!!

They just lack the glory of the old days due to not having everything they did. Like Hi comp big blocks and hi HP numbers. Gross ratings changed everything. Smog equipment looks ugly. Styling took a hit.
Dark years, well, they did get gloomy, but not yet dark. However, like said, some nice things did start to apear. Roller blocks and later, overdrive trannys. |

No one makes a dual intake for a magnum. There's only two manifolds made for them. The edle junk and the Mopar M1 low end stealer. Everyone makes roller cams for them. Mopar,Comp, Crane, you name it. Just dont' expect any of them to be streetable except the Mopar comp. control cams.
