Default MP 3.58 cast crank for 318/340

Any body use this cast crank? I am concerned if I get one that it will be ready to use, or will my guy say it needs some work and I end up putting more money in it and shhould have bought a Callies.

I guess it depends of what you are aiming at. I would propably just get myself a production 360 crank and have the mains turned down to 273-340 main size. Callies propably makes nice 3000$ billet cranks that undoubtly are better, but do you really need one or is a 300$ crank enough for you?

I think a cast crank would do for most applications. What are ya looking at doing?
The crank comes mostly done from what I understand. Ya could call MoPar on this.

They are made by Scat so if Don is your crank guy he wont be happy with it simply because its made in China.

I'm sure they are fin and will hold up to 500 horse no problem. If your gonna run it in your 340 block the KB107 pistons come in .070" over for use in .030" 340 blocks with that crank.

I got two of the MP 3.58 stroke 340 main cranks. They are both still in the box, have not had a opportunty to use either one. I bought them cause i had several standard bore 340 blocks. My intent is to use 360 .060 pistons as .020 340 pistons, which i have gotten for a good price. Although the KB pistons will work also.

Yes, the are probably made in Peoples Republic of China...which is close to the Peoples Republic of California..lol

Last summer they were several of these cranks being sold on ebay for around 200 bucks.

anyway..that my story and i am sticking to it...lol

Biggrin

I have learned that the 4 inch Mopar cranks are cast in Argentina, so it would be reasonable to assume that the 3.58 cranks are too. I recently built a 408, and the shop that did my machine work was very impressed with the quality of the crank. The owner said that was the first crank he had seen that was perfectly indexed, and it also had journals that were right on the money for size and had no taper or out-of-round. I had one problem with the crank, though. It had a spacing problem on the #4 journal that would not allow me to put it into the block if the #3 thrust bearing was in place. My machinist said that on balance, that crank was as close to perfect as he has seen. They usually require MUCH more work.

As far as where it is made, at least it is from this hemisphere (I like that word, it has Hemi in it!). Can we get rid of Australia's gun laws and pull them over to our side of the world? We could park them right on top of Cuba. I'm sure we would get along quite well, although, since we are bigger, we get to dictate what side of the road we will drive on!

Don doesn't like it. The rub is there are very few cranks out there. Callies does not have any cranks for a 318 340. Plus the cost is daunting. My engine is at the shop, I need a crank. I would happily buy the killer MP crank on ebay but I need to buy an 8 bolt flywheel. Another 300.
Rumble, this is my street car 242 Racer Brown and everything to go with it.
I plan on power shifting at 6500. I'm spending that Callies money on pistons.

70, You wanna sell one to a brother in need?

Default mp cranks

the mp cranks require balancing. My 4 inch stroker took three pieces of $60 a piece mallory. total balnce was near $450. this is still cheap compared to anything aftermarket. all MP cranks come spot balanced, meaning that they require precision balancing. failure to do this means instant failure for the bearings

a 318 340 cast crank that passes magnflux and straightness testing will make a good solid piece. I run 10.90's on a factory cast cranks and even give it the ole 175 hp NOS blast at will. a stock piece that checks out will be great for street and bracket racing.

The MP cranks really are nice though.

also, the MP cranks have both 6 and 8 bolt flange pattern already drilled in the crank.

Hehe - we could live on Cuba... at least buying things from the states would result in cheaper postage!! Besides there's enough of us over there already making you guys nervous isn't there?!!
Cheers, James.

What would make us Americans nervous about folks from down under. Last I checked, I didn't find Australia in the "Hate America Club" member roster!

Thats my take on it.

platboy; Aussies in Hollywood? Sure, send somemore over. I'm rather enjoying them myself. There very very good and a pleasure to watch.

heigleracing; Read your post there. In the voice of Darth Vader, "Impressive" And I'm glad you wrote it done. I have been telling people that the cast crank is a good part and a quality build is the number one thing to do first and foremost. Nothin beats a solid bottom end.
