Default Opinions on this 360 build up please...

Building a street bound 360 for my buddys 73 Challenger. It currenly has a 318/904 in it . His current combo is the following:

stock 73 318 longblock
Edelbrok Performer intake
650 Holley DP
Summit 1 5/8" headers
2.25" dual exhaust with x pipe
2 chamber flows
14x3" k&n
904 tranny with Hughes 3000 stall
8 3/4 with 3.73 posi

He is looking for a very streetable set up that will knock down low 13's and put upa good fight with some ls1's. I was looking a SDPC web site and noticed the shortblocks they have for sale. One was a 9.5 to 1 Magnum short block. Came with a 280/512 roller cam. I thought it was a great deal for $1612 bucks! What would be some good budget heads for this combo?? Do normal LA block headers work with this block?? The other thing I thought about doing was buiding a older longblock from scratch. Here is the combo I came up with:

.030 360
9.5 to 1's(speed pros)
stock rods/arp bolts
Holley 650DP
Eddy rpm air gap
XE268..224/230..477/480 on 110
1 5/8" Summit headers
2.25" dual exhaust with x pipe/2 chamber flows
Aerohead J castings with 2.02/1.60's
904 tranny with 3000 stall
3.73 posi
26" rear tires
electric fan

Will this set up be good for mid to low 13's??

It sounds like a combo that could get there. I had a 360 in a '76 B200 van that ran 16.50's in the 1/4, and it was milder than what you are planning. The van weighed 5600 lbs, and did those ET's at an elevation of 5800 feet with no stall and 3.55 gears. Your build takes it up a couple of notches from what I ran, plus it's about a ton lighter, and at a much lower altitude. It sounds like it will be street-friendly too.

My little brother built an engine very similar to that, with the 2 exceptions being the cam and intake (both standard Performers, non air gap.) He used early 340 heads (2.02/1.60) and Hedman 1 5/8 headers, in a 4 wheel drive Dodge half ton.

On DESKTOP dyno, it comes out to 370 HP at 5500 RPM, and 400 ft/lbs at 4000 RPM.

It moves really well for the beast it's in.

I haven't run mine on a dyno yet, but I built one with KB pistons (10.7 comp), Edelbrock Performer RPM heads, M1 intake, MP 450/455 cam, fully balanced (priced mallory metal lately, OUCH!), shot peened rods, Rattler balancer, and a bunch of other goodies. I hope it's making around 400, which it should be given the differences between mine and my brothers. It's in a 300 and moves really well. Can't wait to get it in my Duster.

Sounds like a good combo. Unfortunately, I don't have any track time with either engine to give ya results.

Good Luck, post results when ya get em.

Jay

i would lose the 904 tranny for either of those combo's... either one will likely kill it to death! a 727 will be more like what you will need to handle the increase in power. there is a reason that 904's werent put behind too many 360's...

i would get rid of the tiolet, er, holley and get a 750 edelbrock or thermoterd, and if your gonna have a 3000 stall, go with 284 to 292 cam, ive used the mp 284/484, it works awsome in a mild 360. build the 904 good, or trade up with a 727. with the right tires, it should run 13's (low)

i thought i was the only one that would take a van or 3/4 ton truck to the strip! my 69 D200 would run high 14's with a 318

Don't use the Edel. AFB carb with a 292 cam unless you have all the springs to tune it up. It was a bit of a bear to tune without it. But doable. Better off with a OE big AVS than the 750 Edel. A T-Q is nice to use but a ball buster when adapting it to a squarebore. Underhood clearance can be an issue. It was on my '73 Cuda.

The Holley is a bit small on CFM. Though I like DP carbs. A K&N air horn or other CFM trick would be good to employ with the Holley.

2-1/2 exhaust pipe would be better.

The XE 274 would be better with less stall. However, I see where reuseing old parts, so the 3000 won't be to bad. IMO

The 2.02-1.60 heads should be able to give the power needed. A real nice under valve job (Multi angle cut) should be used. A pocket porting would be great.

A properly built 904 is all thats needed. It's tuff enuff for the job at hand.

This is from someone who has been there and done that on all the above except cam and higher stall in an E-body with a 4spd and 4.10's. I have gone mid 13's with a 318 and a Crane cam close to the XE262.
I suggest the larger cam because of current converter and low 13 second times being sought.

you never looked at my sigpic, did you?... oh wait... i cant have one of those here . try going here to see the 4700 pound beast:
http://pic16.picturetrail.com/VOL686...1/71007117.jpg

and here you will find the type of vehicle i am kind of famous for racing against:
http://pic16.picturetrail.com/VOL686...1/83996271.jpg

those are known as "street cars" here, and with 31" tires that are 11" wide, it is the only "street car" class i can run. i never win... but when they break, it always costs them more for repairs than the purse... and i get to DRIVE my dodge home
