Default small to big

the 360 in my ramcharger has no oil pressure. sooooo, i have decided to go big block. i have a BB 4wd tranny case, a rebuilt SB tranny, and a running 400....what snags am i likely to run into doing this swap?

my ramcharger is an '85 and came equipped originally with a 318/727/NP208 transfer case. the donor 400 came out of a '77 PowerWagon w/a 727/NP203 transfer case.

i have the exhaust manifolds and motor mounts out of the '77 as well. but,
i had some concerns about putting the tranny to the transfer case.

Just swap the small block tranny internals into the BB case and it should work for ya.

I thought about doing the same thing with my '84 RC, but decided that with the weight gains, the extra power made wouldn't be worth it. After all, it still has to pass emissions. But then again, you're in Texas and there isn't emissions testing there, right? For me, it wasn't worthwhile, but for you, it might very well be. Are you towing, four wheeling, or just looking for street performance?

EXTRA WEIGHT GAINS?????? What a couple of hundred more pounds on a 5000+ weight vehicle? Just like having a second passenger in the cab.
Did this. Love it.
Needed:
BB tranny
your BB engine
motor mounts for BB
lengthen the distributor wires
I used the same rad in the '83 RC
Firm up the front leaf springs or add
an extra leaf.
Put on some good shocks if you do not
already have them.
Use the 208 xfer case. It will bolt up to the
727 fine. Make sure you have a good torque
converter! maybe a Hughes XTM!
I made the mistake of a rebuilt RPM that died
on me.
The 208 is very strong inside. I have done several
Low lock WOT take offs on clean dry asphalt. No issues.
(I should have the neck brace removed soon)
Enjoy the torque!!

Not knowing a dang thing about Ram Chargers, could he not just swap in the 400's drivetrain and transfercase?

yes, unless the ramcharger has a long shatf disconnect for the front axle, and the 77 is full time. if the 77 has hubs, he can, then again, if the ramcharger has the dissconnect, his t case has the vaccuum swith for 4x

Default clarification

sorry the original post was a bit ambiguous. when i originally purchase the 400 i got the engine and the transmission. the engine has been rebuilt. in fact, i started it last nite. its bolted up to a rebuilt 727.

now, i also have the 4x4 tranny case and misc. transmission internals from the 77 PowerWagon. but no transfer case from the PowerWagon.

in the 85 RC is a sick 360 and a rebuilt 727. i was thinking of using the internals from the bb 2wd 727 in the case from the PowerWagon, or should i just use the internals from the sb 727?

as for intended use; i tow a boat, go offroading for hunting and camping and use it occasionally to pull stumps. for emissions purposes, i'll just tell the kid at the kwikie lube that its a 318. they don't know anything but jap engines anyway.

sb

use the internals from the big block, but you will need to use the output shaft from the small block, no biggie

The 2WD weighed 3,664 lbs and the 4WD weighed 4,384. I don't, however, know the difference between a smallblock versus a big block when fully dressed, but I'd guess the 360 I'm building for my RC weighs about 500-550 lbs. I've never owned a big block, so I have no basis for compairson.

Dart65,
Not for nothing, but are those numbers with the factory gas tank (34 gallon) full or empty?
When I weighed my truck with me in it (buck eighty) it was 5200.
Big block, nearly full tank of gas, spare tire 31 x 10.50s, and some minor extras.
My '75 Duster is over 3100 with the small block, those RC numbers seem light.

I took those numbers from the Standard Catalog of Light-Duty Dodge Trucks 1917-2002 by John Gunnell. I don't have an original dealership brochure to compare it to.

There is no comparison. I bought a 75 RC demo in 76 with a 440. I did some minor things to it, headers, intake, that was one of the most fun vehicals I've ever owned.

This isn't a knock on small blocks, but you can't beat a big block in a big heavy truck........... or a small light car

It's not a link. The titles of books are supposed to be underlined.

I was referring to power to weight ratios of big blocks versus small blocks.
