Default Push rod length??

How do you measure push rod length for a non-adjustable rocker and hydo cam? I plan on using an adjustable push rod. Thanks.

Hughes and Comp cams etc... sell adjustable length pushrods just for this reason. I would look up the stock length pushrods for the engine. If you milled the heads and /or decked the block, you must subtract this amount from the total length of the pushrod (Stock) and the take the thickness of the head gasket into account. If it is a Fel-Pro unit at .039, this leaves you with twice the amount of space you had before. Therefore, you must add .019 to the abovev equation.http://hughesengines.com/http://www.manciniracing.com/

I was going to just pop the adjustable in and measure it up. I know the head gasket is thinner but the head has never been milled. Every thing is pretty stock except the lifters. I am just wondering how much play do you want in the push rod when initail installed. I looked at the comp website but that dealt exclusively with adjustables. I was looking at expanding the adjustable until I could not move it up and down with my fingers. Would that be safe to assume is the correct length?

NoooooOOOOOOOOooooooooo

There should be no play with the pushrod when it's all inplace. The pushrod should be resting on the lifter depressed about .050 while touching the rocker arm on the shaft torqued down to spec on the head.

The hyd. lifter has about .120 total travel. The pushrod should be placed on the lifter proper and into the cup of the rocker. Note the amount of travel on the lifters plunger downward.
Make sure the lifter is on the cams base circle.
The pushrod should push the lifter down more than .010. Less than that and you could run into other problems. Really the last .010 is not useable. The plunger should not be depressed to far ethier. .050 - .060 is fine. This sets up the plunger about half way. Which is fine if not ideal.
From there, you could force the pushrod into the lifter about .050 or so.

Now you said your head gasket is thinner than what came with the engine?
Stock head gasket is the steel "Thin" unit @ about .019 - .022 compressed. Yours is ???????

Yes it is thicker than the old steel shim but not by much. So, when I get the adjustable push rod I should make it longer until contact is made on both ends and there is no up and down travel, then I should make one complete turn of the pushrod (each trun is .050). Would that be solid in your book? I have dimaneled older engines where those things litterally slap up and down with no trouble. I don't want to chance it though. Does that sound like a solid game plan? Once I get these measured up I plan on notifying comp so the can at least not the change in valve train geometry when using these replacement lifters. Last question is... where can I get an adjustavble push rod at? I can order one from comp but it will take a couple of days.

Comp , Hughes or MoPar will have adjustable pushrods. All will take a few days to get.

No Do not bottom out the pushrod into the lifter.
Just make contact at both ends and the turn the adjustable pushrod to lengthen it so it depress' the into the lifter about .050.

The pushrod should be able to move up and down. If it does not, then the lifter can not do it's job. If the pushrod is to long where it interfears with the operation of the lifter, you will end up with bent pushrods and a destroyed cam on start up. Never mind anything else that could happen. Like the valve smashing into the piston for more damage.
