How to get this light out??
Previously asked how to get the brake warning light out on the dash of original 78 Li'l Red truck. I carefully thoroughly blead all four brakes completely and the brakes all work great and pedal feels good. However , the little red brake light on the dash is still illuminated on the left side of the dash in the center of the four gauges that are there on a LI'l Red truck dash. I know this light is innervated when that brake valve on the frame rail has the slider slid one way or the other. Should I now loosen either the front or rear brake lines where they attatch to this valve and then press on the brake pedal to try to slide that valve back to the middle?? I don't have an assistant to work the brake pedal while I'm under the truck so when bleeding the lines I had to devise a spring loaded device to hold pressure on the brake pedal while I bleed each brake line.

All you had to do was gravity bleed them if you are alone. Are you sure it's the brake switch and not a grounded wire? Unplug it at the prop valve and see if it stays on. If it does it's a grounded wire. If not it's the switch. Did you also use a pair of vice grips to hold that little button on the prop valve while you bled the whole system? You may have to take both sides back down to get it straightened out.

it could be that the parking brake thinks it is applied. make sure that the parking brake is released, and then pull up on the parking brake pedal to see if the light goes off. a little misadjustment or a broken spring can make the light think the parking brake is applied.

I know that some mopars have a warning sensor in the proportioning valve. You might check to see if yours has a wire running to it, but creative is probably right with the e brake switch. That's common on trucks. My '72 D100 Adventurer SE did the same thing and all I did was crawl under the dash and readjust the switch.

I've checked the emergency brake light switch and that's not the problem. DWC43>>>> I assume you mean the proportioning valve when you say "prop-valve" >>> Why do I need to hold a little button on the proportioning valve while bleeding the system?? I haven't looked to see if there is a button to grab but I will look. Thanks for the help

Yes, that's a prop valve for short. LOL!! The valve relives the pressure on the switch and lets it bleed all the air out. Matter of fact, there is a little tool made just for that, but I've only seen pics of it. I pull it out and put vise grips on it or get someone to hold it.

Does the little button have anything to do with bleeding the system?? In other words, if I've blead the whole system and the brakes work great with no sponginess in the brake pedal then do I need to fool with that little button on the prop. valve.?? Does the button have to be moved to get the valve to move back to the center position so the little red dash light will go out??

If you just bleed one you don't have to mess with it. Only time I have had to use it is when you had the whole system down and it helps to get the switch centered so the light goes out.

The exposed button on the prop valve is the stem of a metering valve, it opens at about 25 psi for the front discs and has nothing to do with the warning light operation. The only reason the valve is held open during bleeding is because it's hard to build up 25 psi with the bleeders open.
Once the problem that caused the caution light to come on is fixed, simply applying the brakes should hydraulically center the spool in the prop valve and put the light out. Before doing anyrthing else, I would remove the wire from the prop valve to be sure it's the source of the light. If the prop valve is the source of the light you may have to remove the switch from the prop valve and manually center the spool. |

This past weekend I worked on it some more. Seems like that red light had two different intensities(bright and dim). I think it makes a difference whether or not the engine is running when I get under there and unplug the rubber boat from the prop valve switch as to whether the light goes out or not. Probably just the extra voltage from the alternator making it look brighter. I'm fairly positive that its not the emergency brake switch making the light stay on . That must just be a grounding switch that is closed when the brake pedal moves away from the fully up(off) position. Can't really test it because the red light is always on. I've tried loosening both the front and rear brake lines that attatch to the prop valve and then stepping on the brake pedal and have some brake fluid run down the frame in an attempt to get the prop. valve to center itself again but no luck. Someone at the big daddy Don Garlits show told me about getting that valve to center itself in the prop. valve and that I should actually be able to hear it click from inside the cab when I press on the brake pedal with either the front or back brake line loosened sufficiently so as to allow a little brake fluid to leak off. Tore the whole dash out of it and found the huge wires to the back of the ammeter loose. The back of that dash is fairly simple where you can almost trace the little copper circuits on the back of the circuit board and see which wire they hook to in the wiring harness. I guess I'll just have to unhook the bulb from the back of the dash if I want that light out. Thanks for the help.

DID you take the wire off??
Valvespring, Your last post does not make it clear whether or not you took kunkel's advice.
Did you totally disconnect the wire from the prop valve? and did the light totally go out? If your answers are YES and NO. Then there is something other than the prop valve going on. Tim |

I'm pretty sure it stays on when the rubber boat and wire is dissconnected and the ignition switch is on. I'll recheck it again. What else is there on this 78 Li'l red than that prop valve switch that would light up the bulb??

A bad switch on the E brake or a grounded wire.
