The "S" is probably a "5". The last digit in the casting number refers to the number of core plug changes in the casting core.

I believe the secondary "S" code denotes "Special Engine" Possably a warranty. Perhaps in this case a Marine engine?

O.S. = .05 over sized valve guides
X = over sized valve guides
S = special engine
SP = special engine (TA340 or Police)
WT = Water Tested
A = .020 oversized bore
B = .010 under sized main and rod bearings
E = cast crank

I wish I knew where I found that info. I printed it out on a card and carry it with me now.

this is what my dad came up with

162= 1966
1015=production number
273
-S special application (you were right)
1966 275hp273
1970 TA 340

maybe i got me a 275hp 273???????????
