Question

I really need some help on making a large capacity, stroked small block.
There seems to be very limited info on this and any help would be appreciated.
Living in Oz, it is pretty difficult to pick up the phone and talk to a specialist.
Ta,
James

Hey,

There is a really good article on strokers in general in this month's Mopar Muscle (Feb 2000 issue i think). They give specs on beefing up the bottom end as well as what your choices are for heads and carbs. Rod ratio is discussed and it explains why mopars are especially well suited for stroking. I'm thinking about doing a big block stroker, and found the article very informative. I think they talked about building a 422 small block stroker (340 bored .060", and a 360 crank-- i think, i'll have to check the article later). I don't know much about small blocks, but I know this is the place to find people who do. Good luck with your project! Keep us posted on what you decide to do.

Regards,
Pat

the easiest way is to take the 360 crank and grind the mains down to fit the 340 block and then offset grind the rod journals to a 2.00 pin.
then use an 6" rod and order custom piston's.

the 340 block is safe at .030 over and you can go to .040 but that is pushing it for a street motor.
you might have cooling problems if if you go .040.
that will leave you with a 4.070 bore on the 340 block at .030.
the max you want to go to on the 360 block is .060 and that will leave you with a 4.060 bore. and it's not recommended to take a 360 block out that far.
i know someone will jump in here and say they have one but theres always exceptions to the rule.
thats the poor mans stroked smallblock.

if you have the $$$ for the X or R block then you can get a bigger bore size.
get a 3.79 stroke crank and have it offset ground on the rod journals. then you can get up over 400 cu. in.

i have an article here(somewhere) for a 440 cu. in. smallblock that was built with the X block and a special crank.it's been awhile since i read the article but it's a dream for a sb freak like me.

Hi - 4.100" bore would require 4.00 stroke for 422"
