How much piston to wall clearance by Sealed Power Pistons?
Hello from Hamburg (Germany),
I´m building my first 383 street/strip engine and I delivered the Block yesterday to the the engine shop to bore and hone the cylinders. The mechanic asked me if he can use the original piston to wall(cylinder) clearance which stands in the shop manual. And thats my question. I bought last year unused 383 dome pistons from "Sealed Power". They are made of forged aluminum and .030" over. On the package stand nothing about the piston to wall clearance. With the pistons came original mopar piston rings (no. MO 460). Does anybody know how much clearance they need ? Thanks in forward and I hope you all have better weather then here in germany (24 hours rain). greetings Ja |

The desired clearance is built into the piston. Mic the piston and subtract the reading from the nominal 383 bore dimension (4.250" + .030"= 4.280");
for example, if the piston mics 4.277" the recommended clearance is .003" for normal operation. You wouldn't want to run it any tighter but the clearance can be increased for extreme conditions like nitrous or a blower. |
