small block cam plate question

When I pulled aprt my 360 I noticed only 3 bolts holding the retaining plate in. The bolt that has the hole drilled in it is missing. I know that this engine has never been apart before.

Cause I've got a hole with threads, and there is a little pointer thingy that attaches to the one bottom bolt. It just looks weird, missing a bolt

the oil comes out of the upper hole, drips down along the plate and onto the "pointer thingy", as you call it, and helps direct that oil to lubricate the timing chain.

The upper holes of the block? I put it all together and found the pointer thingy had a tang on it that slides into an empty bolt hole. Hang on Ill go out and take a picture

most 360's i have done dont have the bolt with the lil hole, while 318's and 340's have the bolt.
the oil comes through the bolt hole from the valley. Rallye, i would put a bolt in it if you have one, less windage, and, the timing chain gets oiled plenty
the lil tang thingy fits into the hole

from a book."if one of the four bolts have a hole drilled through it, this bolt goes in the upper passenger side bolt hole-top left looking at the fron of the block. some enines use a small drip pan rather than a hollow bolt, it goes in the same location".

how to rebuilod small block mopar engines PAGE 124, also, there is piston ring instructions in this book! same thing i said!

If look you at the pic, it can only fit in the one place. If it had the hollow bolt it would go in the same place as you've mentioned.

Just looked at my 80 FSM. It shows the "oiling tab" installed exactly as your picture indicates, without a hollow bolt and with the locating tang in the bottom driver-side bolt hole. That differs from the "How to rebuild your Mopar SB" instructions but I would choose the factory manual over it in this case.I'd scan and attach a picture but I ain't doing too well in that dept. lately. Sec.9, page 39 for anyone with this manual. Cheers!

That picture is correct. If you'll remove the plate and flip it over you will see a grove cut in the rear. If feeds oil through the open bolt hole. It also gets oil from the two large holes above. I throw the tabs away and use a drilled bolt on our race cars and limit the amount of oil that goes through it.

I did the same thing with my 340, since I didnt have a drilled bolt, I just drilled one of my own. A little peace of mind for me to know that the chain and gears up front are getting enough oil.
