Default Distributor help!

I am going to be getting a new distributor as mine is shot. Regardless I was running the mopar performance unit with the chrome box backing it. I have though about a msd pro billet unit, but is it compatable with the stock electronic ignition? If grabbed this I would end up buying a 6al box, but that wouldn't be for another month and I need my car back up again. Or would I do better with an fbo systems distributor as people seem to like them on here as well?

For mostly street with some strip, I would go with the FBO setup. The distributor starts as a MOPAR electronic unit. Then it is properly phased and the advance is tuned. The FBO ECU is a great choice to go eith it. If it should ever fail, you still have the chrome box to get you home and then you can contact Don for a replacement ECU. His setup is also a lot less expensive than the MSD setup. It will also have a stock appearance.

The billet unit will work with the chrome box until you can get your 6al. If you have a lot of upgrades to the engine, the msd box is really the way to go.

An MSD unit is a waste on a car that is mostly street. Come on, you can get a complete ignition system from FBO for the cost of the MSD billet distributor.

I had my dist done by FBO systems .Best $80.00 I ever spent on this car.I wish I would have nown about them 10 years ago.My car runs so much better. No more detination and it pulls hard through the whole rpm range. It even idles better.I actually had to set my idle down 400 rpms. They do eliminate your vacum advance though so don,t even send along if you want to keep it for something else.

The FBO ignition fires like a MO-FO.

The cost of a billet dist. just didn't seem like good value for $ spent on a street ride.

My thinking was what exactly will a billet housing do for my mostly under 4000RPM (6000Max. once in awhile) street car motor?

I got in on the first FBO shipment and that was $ well spent.

I may be mistake, but I thought that Don would retain the vacuum advance, if you requested it. It's been over a year, since I discussed this with him. So, I could be mistaken...

Don has 3 stages of dist rebuild. stage 1 will keep your vac advance. stage 2 eliminates that feature. stage 3 is a race only application, and timing is locked at full advance... you need a retard box to start the engine with this dist.

Default distributor

I have bought so much MSD stuff that it is coming out of my ears. Its good and works.

BUT..................... MSD has had a price increase on everything they make. It is a huge increase and it pisses me off. I just bought a 6al for one of my Darts. it went from 172.00 to 229.00 they have out priced all of their stuff and I don't like it.
So any alternative to MSD is probably money saved I think the chevy dist went up to 265.00???

I am running an electronic aftermarket mopar performance distributor on my 340 with a MSD 6al box. I just put the distributor in out of the box. It runs okay and has the vacuum advance. How do I know the vacuum advance is working okay? It takes the gas okay. Im not up much on distributors. Should I get a MSD distributor as well or am I okay with the Mopar?

The MOPAR electronic distributor is fine. Sending it to FBO for proper tuning will make it just as good (if not better) than the MSD distributor. The major failing with the MOPAR electronic setup is the poor quality ECU. FBO has a far better ECU.

Unless your car spends more time on the track than on the street, there is no real need to spend that kind of cash on the MSD setup.
