OK, I'm sold. I always wanted to try them.
So what cam should I run with them in my 383.
(stock shortblock, double roller timing chain)
What intake should I run with the Rhodes lifters and a cam? I would guess for maximum effect it would be a high lift, high overlap.
The lifters take care of the negative effect on the bottom end. I would probably need double valve springs. What about valve clearance?
HelP!

Whats up Doc?In reality V.D.L.s were invented when cam technology was in a dark age(1979-1982).Compression ratios were 8 or 8.2:1(you remember emissions?)and everything high performance was EVIL!!So VDLs had a place in the market,a very viable place, but today we have modern computer generated cam profiles that are even MOPAR specific and we can run 9.8:1 compresion or so.Back then many cams took as much as 80* to open and close the valve to and from .050,today MPs cams do it in 43*(484/284)so the actual use for which they were intended doesnt really exist anymore, this doesnt by any means imply that there isnt some hidden adaptation that is just waiting to be discovered,I would really like to hear from anyone who has run VDLs on a relatively fast ramp type cam and what you thought of them.As far as valve adjustment you need to talk to the manufacturer, what you really need to know is reccomended lifter preload(how far down in the lifter bore should the plunger sits)stock mopar specs are .030-.060(high rpm motors like .010)Let me know if you end up running them and how they work for you....PRO...

I haven't used them with a really fast ramp cams, cause I don't even know what they are. But I've used them with some MP grinds, 280/.474" in a BB and 292/.509" in a small block. Both worked great, better than with the MP lifters in my application. They did just what they are told to, gave more torque at lower rpm and higher vacuum at idle. The BB was slightly modified 8.7:1 engine in a 3600 lbs car, I got 16 mpg with it and run 12.9 at 109 mph at the track. The 360 that had the bigger cam was a real no brainer, a performer intake, cheapo headers and the cam it run 13.26/107 mph in the same car, the 440 used a 11" 2500 stall converter and the 360 a 10" with 3500 stall speed. Gear ratio in both cases was 3.23 and TF 727 transmissions, tires were 205/75/14 BFGoodrich lifesavers. Both engines were occasionally wound to 6500 rpm in third gear, which theoretically means 150 mph. With a '73 four door Valiant!

Too Cool, this is going to be fun!
Thanks for the input guys.
I haven't turned the TV set on in the evenings since I discovered this message board. Its really great having a source for GOOD advice about engine mods and performance parts combos.

Back around '89, I bought a '70 Challenger with a 383. It had a slightly loppy cam in it. I don't know the specs of the cam or compression ratio.

This thing used to load up and cause the engine to flood out at idle. I put in the Crane Fast Bleed lifters and the idle smoothened up, the exhaust was no longer rich and it didn't flood out at idle.

The Crane lifters definately melowed out the low RPMs, and it definately came back to life as the RPMs increased.
