Default Need 8 3/4 info, please

I will be checking over an 8 3/4 to possibly buy tomorrow and would like some tips on what to look for because I am pretty ignorant about rear ends.

It is supposedly from a 72 Duster with an open diff, 3.23 gears.

Any tips you can give me on how to check it over (bearings, wear, etc.) would be very much appreciated.

What casting is it? i think that the 489 casting is the strongest. i have the EXACT same rear end. mine was a 489 casting and when i replaced it, it looked very good inside, no worn parts or chips. Now its sitting in my patio in bags. the gears were printed onto the ring so if you need to check it, look around the ring. i have some pics on my computer if you need to compare the 8 3/4's.

489 was the newest. They made several changes in the 489 that made it weaker than the 742.

What is the intended usage?

Putting it in a A body? If you want it for something else it will be too narrow.

With the exception of obvious damage, it's nearly impossible to check the condition of a rear end without complete disassembly and even then the eyeball can be wrong.

I've seen wear patterns on a ring/pinion that looked absolutely normal but wound up howling when installed.
