Default Why did I stink up Vegas???

Why does my Combo Suck?? And what do I need to change?? Ok I know the 7* nose up is hurting me, but not to the tune of 14.50 @ 99 mph. My 60’ was 2.50 R\T 1.7ish
I made a mistake and had ¾ of a tank of Gas, I weigh 350# Yea I know, I am on a diet!!
What should I be running, or can expect from this combo, What do I need to get it right.
Thx Diego

tuning is exactly the correct answer, thats all you need.
what i have learned is that the first time you take a new combo down the track, you can cut up to 2 seconds off of it by the time it is completely dialed in. at least, this works for 11 second and up cars

you have a heavy car, with a motor that doesn't make power till it is revving. the distributor advance curve and the jetting is gonna make the difference between barely spinning the tires and needing a set of 10 inch slicks

You should also leaned the carb out for Vegas...the track is at 2000 ft elevation ...

ootb = out of the box

It's a good combo. Just play with it. Timming is a good place to start.

Later,

Greg

Heavy car/driver combo or not, 99 mph should put you solidly onto the 13s. That 2.50 sec. 60' time is awful. You must be spinning the tires a bunch at the start. Try 'flooring it' a little slower(practice). Also, shifting that 340 with good heads & big cam, at 4800rpm?, way too low, try 5500+. I had a stock 69' Charger R/T, 440, 3.55 rear, go 13.8s at 98 mph, 2.0 sec. 60' times. I say, your problems are all in the first 60 feet! And, yeah, get that pinion angle back down to earth!

Thx for all the suggestions. I made a mistake I shift between 6500 and 6700.
I too think I need to get the 60' under control. I am not really spinning so much as bogging off the line, the car does not shoot out, I am guessing the pinon setup is the cause.

No, not the pinion, although that needs to be under control soon.
If your not spinning, you are having acceleration problems.

I have no idea the specs on that cam. I do know the 340 needs some RPMs. That car is heavy, E-Bodies were never as light as they looked. I would work on the carb, a little bit, accelerator pump and nozzle. But in all honesty......

I think its the convertor. Leaving off footbrake I would bet it doesnt stall nearly that high. Its boggin that little motor down. Its too tight which explains the very good MPH.

I would be willing to guess with it hooked up and getting out of its own way, that it will run 13.7s or so.

I would think you need a convertor closer to 3500 rpms. I know this is a street car. You would be suprised how well the new style convertors can act on the street these days. The old days of the old Opel Cores sucked on the street, because of their inefficiency. The new technology of fin angles couple with stators etc, have really helped this. Now saying that, realize a new convertor for a good one, is not cheap. But in my opinion and I Have stated it numerous times, the convertor is the most important part of the combination. You can go through 2 or 3 cheap ones and not be right. Spend the money get a good one, and get it once. Now I dont care which brand you choose but have it built for your combo. At least talk to a real convertor company and have them recommend one, the days of off the shelf convertors from summit or Jegs is behind us.

I wonder if that converter is stalling at 3500? With that gear and tire it should 60ft better if the converter is working. Dave is right too. tuning.
Dist phasing.

Mine ran 13.13 with a 2.0 60. 340, 242@50, air gap, Demon 750, 3.54, 28in BFG Drag radials.

Default Mopars at the strip

Hi diego-ted;

I was at vegas, first pass Friday was fastest 13.297 at 101.87 from there, all other passes were slower 13.5's and 13.7's in the afternoons. The altitude started Friday in the morning at ~2950' and by afternoon was anywhere from 4000' to 4400'. There was one of the guys with a weather station near us and he was watching the altitdue change for the worst. Same with Saturday and Sunday, if you look up altitude correction factors in NHRA web site you can correct to sea level will help make numbers closer to what your used to. 14.50 @ 99.00 at 2900' equals 13.99 @ 102.63 for 4200' 13.77 @ 104.29 not to bad. Did you weigh the car?....

Default Air density

Hi dodgetkboy78;

The air density can change, air temperature, humidity and altitude affect this. Altitude as you go higher there is less air stacked on top of each other. As the temperature changes so does the density of the air. The hotter the air the faster it moves and the more space it takes up per cubic inch (O2). The cooler the air the slower it moves the more molecules per cubic inch (O2). Humidty also alters it as the water vapor takes up space that air (O2) would have in the air. Also known as partial pressure of a gas in a volume. Hope this helps

Denny

LA360Dart is talking about Density Altitude, an air quality calculation based on barometric pressure, temp, and humidity.
