rolleyes2 potatoe potatoe

heres one for the record, i just bought a 74 D300 (nice clean 51,000 miles) it has a 318, well, the exaust fell off, so i installed new cheapo till its header time, now, the point. i thought it was just running like poop at first, wich it was. after new distributer, plugs wires cap rotor and rebuilt carb it runs really goot! but, it has a potatoe potatoe idle, timing, mixture dont help.
well, since the valve cover gaskets were leaking, i took htem off, ran it up to tdc and stuck i dial indicator on the rocker.
i got 270/278 dur and 411/426 lift????
so, any idea's ? i swear this motor has never been apart the gaskets are painted blue, and it has a maintenance record since new.
never seen this one, what happend?

like most 318's with a stock timing chain, it's probably got about 3 feet of stretch. also check for a stuck EGR valve-if it has one.........djs

well, the chain jumped a few days after posting this, so you were right, but, i changed the cam out with the new chain.
as near as i can figure, it is identical to a 340 cam (measured) that i have
just another one of those mysteries.
i have a maint log, and teh gaskets were painted engine color, and i know the motor was never taken apart.
never know.......................................

Alot can happen in thirty years, and memories fail, I believe nothing I hear and half of what I see
You must like changing timing chains, ever since you posted about your rams chain, I just cant stop thinkin about my ram with 184000 miles, and its oem chain. Knock on wood.

Hey Cageman, do you have room in that think tank for me with my 196K chain?

It's like the doctor telling you that you are a candidate for a heart attack. Just try not thinking about that.

So, what sounds like "nucka nucka nucka" at idle? LOL!!

Excuse me, Mr. Quayle, but there's no "E" in potato, unless it's the plural potatoes.
