Biggrin tranny question

alright, i have a 727 in my 1 ton, it shifts itself down off throttle to 2nd at about 30, and to first at about 15 (4:10's)
it also holds itself in gear till the same, like the throtle pressure is off, well, except its not, it is adjusted perfectly.
other than this, it shifts good, works good, even feels lik eit has a shift kit
it kicks down lik eit should, it just acts like a allison i guess.

any idea's?

My 904 does the same crap. It will NOT put itself into 4th gear until it hits 35 MPH and it does like clockwork.

I haven't adjusted the bands yet, and it could be partially the clutches, but my guess would be the band adjustments. It may have something to do with the pump as well, but I don't see any adjustments there.

Try the band adjustments first, then try adjusting the kickdown throttle pressure linkage. If that doesn't work, you're looking at a rebuild.

Basic upshift speed is controlled by the throttle pressure linkage, band adjustment has nothing to do with it.

It's unusual for a Torqueflight to 2nd downshift when coasting to a stop, they usually wait unti almost a dead stop before downshifting 3-1. Linkage adjustment and idle speed will have an affect on it.

Just wonder, how does idle speed change the way it shifts?

Typical D300 tranny. Mine does the same thing. It's designed that way to give engine braking while carrying heavy loads. Works great I might add too. Still kicks down when you need it to as well. You could take the gov. apart and change it, but why bother. Loaded down it's helpful.

Well, maybe I can't give the technical jargon, but if the idle is a little high and you are applying the brakes, it seems that the tranny senses a load, like going uphill, and it drops down a gear. Not too technical, like I said. I have made that happen by pressing the gas and the brake at the same time. (Years ago on my dad's car LOL!!)

yup, lil threeeighteenee (soon to be getting 4bbl, 260/260 comp, roller chain)

boy, it sure does pull nice, better than my other trucks. it is amazing how well it hauls a load, and it is amazing how a lil 2bbl 318 can out power a 318 magnum once you put a trailor behind it

Uh, pardon my ignorance, but aren't 904's only three speeds?

Isn't it a 518 or 999 if it's a four speed?

To answer your question Six Gunner, yes the 904 is a 3 speed transmission, just like the 727 that dodgetkboy78 is talking about.

an A-518, A998, A999 are all 4 speeds.

UUuummmm, A998 and A999 are heavy duty 3spd A904 variants with lower first gear and 4 gear planetaries and such.

Close, not all 998's or 999's had the low gear set. I forget what year that actually started but the 318(998) and 360(999) variants were around before that.

That's true, not all had them. Just throwing out some differences in them over the A904. A lot of taxi and police cars will have the low gear set though.

Some '80 models in the 904 family had the low gear set, all '81 and later have the low gear set.
