Gas tank/fuel line question 440
I upgraded my fuel line and pickup from 5/16 to 3/8". I also replaced the 35-year-old gas tank. The pickup had two hose connectors. The bigger one is obviously for the fuel line. What's the smaller one for? Is it for a fuel return line? If so, do I need one with the 440 that I'm sticking in this car (69 Roadrunner). If yes, can you give me some guidance on how that's done?
I have a Holley 850 double pumper going on the engine. Thanks! Terry |

You did not say what car it is on, but it's a vent line.

If it's anything like my A-body, I'm pretty sure it is NOT a vent line. The vent line is at the TOP of the tank. He stated that his pickup (which in my A-body tank is located on the front side in the middle of the tank) has the extra tube. If he left this as a vent, gas would spill out till it got below that point. Unless, of course, you run a tube up higher than the top of the tank to vent it. I imagine the second tube is for a return. What's the size? 5/16"? 1/4"? In any case, people often disagree on the issue of running a return line and whether or not you need it. I haven't come to my own conclusion yet... For now I run a vent at the top of the tank, block the return, and feed out the 3/8".
Hope this helps... |

dwc,
The car is a 69 Roadrunner. I agree that it seems odd that it would be a vent tube as I have two vent tubes on the top right of the tank (why two? I don't know!!) and these show up in my service manual as vent tubes. The service manual does NOT show two tubes on the stock pickup; it only shows the 3/8" fuel line feed and not the 1/4" feed. Thinking out loud, it MUST be for a return line. Unless I hear otherwise, I thinking like swingin72: plug it up and run without a return line. The thing is, I don't know if the Holley double-pumper works better (or requires) a return feed. I have a stock mechanical fuel pump.... Thanks for the thoughts; any more? Terry |

Fuel Vapor Separator
I have the same setup on my 69 Roadrunner with a 440. "The 1968-71 440 and 426 Hemi models use a special vapor separator which simultaneously filters the fuel using a screen and routes heat vaporized fuel back to the fuel tank"...quote from Year One Catalogue, page 192 2004 B/E Body Catalogue. Is it really necessary, probably not, and you can just run the fuel line. I have the separator installed and installed the 3/8" fuel line with a 1/4" return(vapor) line. Good luck.
