idle smoking

my 318 smokes when it idles. not bad or nothing, but a bit. also, around town, it will burn more oil (or a lot of idling) than on the highway.
i think i have a idea, but could use some other thoughts.
it is not sick, runs really good, and has 54,000 miles on it

Other than tearing into the engine try a heavier weight oil or one of the motor additives to reduce smoking. Also make sure your breather and PCV valve are in good/clean condition.

Do a compression test before spending any money on it.

all between 140 and 150.
i think im gonna leave it alone and build another one i got. it is a dash3 with a steel crank and such. i wanna tube the lifter oiling and put mech cam in it and forgies. a good all around truck motor. i dont mind adjusting valves every spring.
th ereason is because it is a 4:10 geared truck with little 16.5's, so it needs to be able to run at 3500+ for long periods of time.

Keep in mind the -3 engines have water heated intakes (not exhaust heated) which makes swapping parts an adventure in itself.
