Default Oil pressure gauge acting up

Ive got a 70 roadrunner that all of a sudden the oil pressure gauge quit.I replaced the sending unit and it goes up to about 10psi and then slowly drops to nothing. The engine runs fine.I drove it about 20 miles home before i even noticed it wasnt working.Could the gauge have gone bad?

It could be a bad gauge, bad connection on a wire or it could be something wrong in the engine.

I would connect a mechanicle gauge to the engine and see what it shows.

I pulled the valve covers and it is oiling the top end so i think that rules out a spun cam bearing.I think something has gone haywire with the gauge, its only 35 yrs old.

More than likely(that means this is a guess), it is a defective sending unit. What happens is a gradual buildup of sludge in the sending unit until the sludge finally prevents the sending unit from operating in its full range.

With the key off, place attach the sending unit lead to ground. Turn the key to 'Run'. The guage should swing to max oil pressure. If it does not, then there is a problem with the guage or some wiring. If it does swing all the way, then the problem is a faulty sender (even though it is a new unit).

Does your temp guage and fuel gauge work? If they don't work either, then you have a failed IVR (instrument voltage regulator).
