Best intakes?
OK I race a 1/4 mile circle track 360.
My question is which stock intake is best to run: 1971 340 4 brl 1978 360 4 brl 1977 360 2 brl with an adapter for a Holley We must run a Holley 4412 2 brl in this class. I have these available to me and am just wondering which is the best, any opinions? |

You should post this here;
http://www.moparchat.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=40 In the circle forum. Since your talking class racing. Speak with DWC, he knows nothing, Gotcha DW. (Gotta fix this poke ICON!) DW does roundys alot. He'll help ya with the 2bbl class. Otherwise, IF you can run a T-Q carb, use the T-Q intake. Actually, even if you can't run a T-Q, use that intake. Block off whats not needed. like the floor jets for EGR. |

Your best manifold would be the racing 2 bbl manifold offered by MP. It's a big runner purpose built racing setup. Didn't see the post on the Circle burner forum so I posted here.

I posted here on purpose. There may be someone out there with first hand knowlegde that wouldnt go to the circle track forum, just shotgunning more opinions. The manifolds listed are the only ones I have, any other opinions??

The rules say "stock cast iron intake, stock exhaust".
My plan is to modify the plenum divider like the Mopar book describes to a LD 340 intake and plum for rear water lines to thermostat housing, on a stock 4 bl 360 manifold. (like Sanborn does in the Circle track sticky) |

Stick with the thermoquad intake. If you can use and adapter that lets you slide the carb front and back to even out the flow. Best exhaust manifolds are the '92 R/T truck manifolds or the ealry '70 340 pieces. Extrude hone the exh. manifolds to increase the flow.

Yes, it's costly, but worth the hp gain on a restricted engine. Attention to details win races and even more so in restricted classes. Attention to the grey areas of the rule book is a must too.

How much does it cost to do a set of manifolds, just curious.

I'll have to check. Been a long time. I had a web site for the company we used one time. And it is really up there too. Let me see if I can find it for ya.

Spacer
Dave, What do the rules say about the adapter and any spacers that you can run? Use the largest (thickest) spacer to allow air to flow from both sides of the carb to both sides of the intake. If you can run the open spacer, then I would use the 4 bbl thermoquad style intake. I haven't done all the flow bench testing with all types of intakes to know in all certainty that this is correct, but I have seen the results of running this intake in stiff competition and it works.
For anybody wanting to run a restricted engine or small carb rule engine, there are some simple things that you will need to look at. First, run as much compression as possible within the rules and budget. Pay special attention to cam timing. You may want to try some radical advances like 8° with a resulting installed intake centerline of 100° to 102°. If you do the math, the better lobe separations appear to be in the 108° to 110° range for the 360 engines. The 340's are much less cam timing, LSA and compression fickle from my experi |
