Default What to do with water pump housing with no heater?

I'm in the middle of swapping the factory A/C & heater for an aftermarket one, but there will be a while when neither one is in the car, and I'd like to be able to run the engine in the meantime.

On the water pump housing (440 big-block), there are two pipe "risers" that lead to the heater core. Until I'm ready to put the new heater core in, can I remove those risers and plug the holes, or will that block coolant flow to the engine? I know I can temporarily run a length of heater hose between the two pipes to complete the circuit, but plugging the holes would be quicker and cleaner.

So, does the coolant HAVE to run through the heater core fittings, or will it still circulate through the engine with those two holes plugged?

Also, does anyone know which of those two risers goes TO the heater core, and which one is the return FROM the heater core?

Thanks,
Scott Gardner

I second that.

They were plugged off on heater delete cars.

Thanks. I would have hated to "trick-f*ck" myself by doing it the neat, clean way (plugging the holes), only to block the coolant and overheat the engine.

And how do we block them off? On my small block, I just looped the heater hose over. Are there not plugs of some sort that could be used? And were could I get them?

Default Caps

Any good auto parts store should have rubber by pass caps.

I just went to Home Depot and got two 1/2" NPT plugs. I think that's the right size - if not, I picked up two 3/8" NPT plugs as well. I'll put them on tonight and report back tomorrow with the correct size.

On the big block, pipe plugs are the best option.

On the SB, go with the block off caps from the parts store. No place to put pipe plugs in

Glad I picked up the 3/8" NPT plugs as well as the 1/2" - the 3/8" plugs turned out to be the right size. I put some Teflon pipe dope (not tape) on the threads, and everything's watertight. Now I just have to put the pipes somewhere I won't lose them between now and when I finish up the heater & A/C installation!

Thanks again,
Scott Gardner

Rumblefish On our circle track car We tapped the hose fittings and used pipe plugs. It has worked great and we don't worry about blowing rubber caps out. This information is only worth what you have paid for it.

We've used rubber caps before, but check them often. They will need replacing often. Most likely wont have the pressures our race engines have, so they may last a little longer for you. Advance auto has them.

If you are only going to do this temporarily, just run a bypass hose from one outlet back into the other outlet. It will just simplify things and you won't have to eyeball it or worry about it leaking.
