Simplifying wiring on 3-wire alternator?
I'm replacing the stock alternator on my 440 with one of the Powermaster 85-amp three-wire units. I'm also removing the amp gauge from my dash, and I'd like to beef up the wiring from the alternator to the battery.
If I'm bypassing the stock ammeter, what are the minimum connections I need to make to the alternator for it to charge the battery? It will obviously need a heavy-gauge wire from the alternator to the battery, as well as a switched-12V source so the alternator knows when the ignition is on. I'm assuming that I need to keep the external voltage regulator, so I'll need those connections as well. Any other suggestions? Scott Gardner |

Is it the 3-wire GM type alternator? If it is, there is an internal regulator and you will not need the stock one. For bypassing your amp meter and alternator hook up see MadElectrical.com tech section. Good website.
