489 vs #2 rear end
Can anyone explain the difference between these two rears? I am new to the Mopar ranks and need a reasr for my '67 GTX and not sure which to get. Thanks in advance.

#2 is the 742 housing (last three digits of the casting number on the drivers side) with a straight 1 3/4" pinion shaft used prior to '69.
The 489 housing has a 1 7/8" tapered pinion shaft and was used from '69-on. The pinion shaft diameter and the bearing size is the major difference, the 742 would have the preferred clutch type Sure-Grip unit (is so equipped) and the 489 would have the less desireable cone type Sure-Grip. The 489 uses a crush sleeve to set the bearing preload which is a source of problems; it can be replaced by an aftermarket spacer for more reliability. |
