Default Ballast resistor question

Ok, I have Mopar Electronic Distributor conversion on my '70 440. I know the ballast resistor limits the voltage and amps to the coil. If it go's, and they will sooner or later, I can jump it out and the motor will run. What will happen if I run it without the resistor?

It will be hard on the coil, possibly burning it out eventually. I have jumped them in a emergencey and have never had a problem.

Idea P. S. ....................

Join the club. For years I have known and myself included many Mopar owners who have gone ahead and bought a spare and kept it somewhere in the car. If your embarassed, just don't tell anyone. But if it happens, you will be on the road again quick. Just a thought.

Just thinking out loud.

I have a spare on the fire wall and glove box. Since there famous for going bad on a seconds notice, it's not a big deal.

Default Ballast resister

I know people who jump them out and run forever with race coils. I don't recommend doing this on a long term basis but if I were in a pinch I would jump it out in a second. The resister limits the power the coil can get Volts X Amps. I like the 1/4 ohm resister on engines that typically run no longer than 30 minutes below 3k RPM. That used to be Mopar's guidelines.
